Carrier Group Battle

We will be trying our hands at a carrier group battle--probably Kzinti vs. Lyrans. (I will post the ship details as soon as I get them worked out.) This will be our first time using the Module J rules for Fighters and Carriers, so be sure to review that material beforehand if you can.

If we have any new players attending, we will split into two groups and play separate battles.

A fairly good battle. The tactics worked out way differently than expected. I would enjoy playing another carrier battle to see how some different tactics would work out.

I'm going to have to miss this one after all. I have an admissions paper to write for my MA program and I need this weekend to do it. Sorry guys, have fun!

Not so different from the Eighth Airforce fighter furballs over Germany, or the dogfights in the Battle of Britain. Once the fighters tie each other up, they are pretty much out of the larger battle.

In a nutshell, the dogfights occur when two or three fighters enter the same hex and one challenges another. It ties up those engaged for several impulses as they buzz around in the hex trying to gain superiority. Dice are then rolled to determine advantage and firing options. It seems like dogfighting participants are effectively removed from the combat for several impulses during this time. If nothing else, it may stall them.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "open targeting rules," but for the time being, we will continue as we have been--drone targets are announced when the weapons are launched. I'm also curious to see how the speed-8 fighters do in this battle. Their drones are still speed-20, so that is good. There will definitely be a difference of tactics between to the two sides due to the differences in their fighters...

With only seven ships and few heavy weapons, this is going to be a dronefest! The speed-8 Lyran fighters are going to have a tough time of it out there. I'm not familiar with the dogfight rules, so need to take a look at those before the game. I'm going to call this a stalemate at first glance. Both sides have good drone defenses, aegis and few heavy weapons, so there isn't likely to be any devastating alpha strikes. Are we still using open targeting rules?

Given my distaste for the dreaded ESG's, I would love to play that Kzinti CVS.

Correction to the unrelated note....I just went to the Amarillo website and realized that I am missing two ships. The Battleship and the Tug. So, I ordered them and will begin on the ISC fleet when they arrive. That will make a 17 ship fleet!! Peace will be assured!!! :-)

I just looked at the ship run-down and it looks interesting. I have a feeling that the Kzinti fighters will be outmatched since they only move speed 8 compaired to the speed 15 of the HAAS. but, I could be proven wrong...it has happened before.

On an unrelated note...I am FINALY done with the Andro miniatures and have started on the 15 ISC ships that I have. I will bring the Andros with me for everyone to look over at the next meet up.

Well, I worked out the details for the Carrier Group Battle. Check out the Pages section for the rundown on ships, fighters, etc.

Two of the members who will be joining us are newcomers to the game, so we will actually have two battles playing simultaneously--one for the experienced players running the Carrier Group battle, and a second to introduce the new players to the game. I will be helping the new players with that one.

Already 7 confirmed... At this rate, we're going to have one hell of a battle!
