Lets Meetup and see our favorite helmsman in "To Be Takei"

This is opening night for a brand new documentary starring and about George Takei. I would love to see us show up in force and represent our fandom.
here is the synopsis....

"George Takei doesn’t shy away from digging into his remarkable career and personal life in Jennifer Kroot’s incisive documentary. As a child forced into Japanese-American internment camps, the actor-turned-activist reveals the ways that racism affected him well into his early acting career, where he played stereotypical Asian stock characters in film and television shows. Even after landing the iconic role of Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, Takei’s sharp eye, coupled with his wicked sense of humor, continued to challenge the status quo well into the twenty-first century.

Now at 76, nine years after formally coming out of the closet, Takei and his husband, Brad, have become the poster couple for marriage equality, highlighting homophobia through television interviews and hilarious skits, many of which have gone viral and garnered widespread attention. Whether dishing on William Shatner or parodying the now-infamous comments made by Tim Hardaway, Takei proves time and again why his presence in popular culture remains as fresh and necessary as ever."

I had been thinking of posting this on one of my other groups that I help to organize. Does anyone want to meet beforehand at the cafe next door or Magnolia's across the street?

Here at Hot Lips now with Robin. Waiting for others before we order pizza.

Daniel - me too! And then I have to publicly apologize, sigh...

So I made it back to Vancouver but I guess I was a little optimistic on timing. Won't make it tonight. Hopefully next event:) Have fun everyone!

Re. pre-movie nosh: there's always "Atomic Pizza", a couple doors down from the Hollywood Theatre. Rave food reviews, 3 calzones, pizza slices of differing sizes, whole pizzas and all the mix 'n match toppings you could wish for. I wasn't wow'ed by the food quality reviews of Magnolia's; not the "small bites", no problem there, but the food quality reviews re. food flavor were mixed. Sorry 'bout that Justin - don't mean to rain on your parade.
I think if my ride - along partner goes for it, I'd prefer Atomic at 5:30, 5:45.

Charles, I don't think I am going to Hot Lips before the movie, but if I decide to go can I have a ride?

      August 22

  • Lou

I'm really hoping to make the movie tonight. I'm in Phoenix trying to catch a flight home. If I make it in time I'll see you all at the theater.

    August 22

  • Ben

I really wanted to go but I double booked this evening way before I confirmed this. Hope it's as awesome as I expect it to be!

DANIEL! Would you like to weigh in on Justin's idea of a bite to eat beforehand? Murianna has a good point: since it's Friday at dinnertime, I'd suggest earlier rather than later, say 5:30, for those who can beat the rush hour traffic (Friday eve - ugh!) or join us whenever you can at Magnolia's before the movie at 7.
Anybody already bought their ticket directly from Hollywood Theatre online? I did. Just some thoughts....Justin, this was your bright idea. So please feel free to speak up. :-)

I will probably eat at home and be a little early for the show if time permits.

Did anybody watch the little video clip on the Hollywood Theater website promoting "To Be Takei"? In the Hollywood Theater video clip, (see Daniel's link above), there's about a two-second snippet of Walter Koenig speaking. OMG, I nearly fell out of my chair! I just didn't recognize him at first until the voice triggered the connection. Advice our <~35 yr. members: Don't Get Old -Avoid At All Costs!
*Daniel* - I couldn't find the ticket prices anywhere on the site. I'm calling tomorrow for tix prices and will post here. This'll be fun!! (although anyone not comfortable about the subject of gay rights. marriage equality, etc., is gonna be squirming in his seat ;-) + elbow to the ribs).
AND I DON'T WANT TO START A SOCIO-POLITICAL DISCUSSION HERE, SO NO FOLLOW - UP COMMENTS, PRETTY PLEASE. We're celebrating Star Trek & the finest damn helmsman in any 5 galaxies!
Stay tuned for tix prices tomorrow, same Bat Channel.

ticket prices wil be $8. They expect to post online sales and times on Tues or Wed next week. Since they are showing it a full week they do not anticipate a sell out issue, but I will keep you posted once I find out more.

      1 · August 15

    • Lisa D.

Oops, Daniel - sorry, I didn't mean to double up on you there.

  • Lisa D.

Daniel, I got a voicemail from Connor at Hollywood Theatre and here's an UPDATE: 1) Tix are $8 for G.A., $6.00 for students and seniors and $5 for Hollywood Theater members. 2) The show time for "To Be Takei" on August 22nd is NOT YET set. It will probably start between 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The actual time of the 8/22 showing will be set by Monday, August 18th. Wow, really helpful.
I will check back on Monday to get the actual, fixed showtime and will publish it here then.

Stay tuned to this Bat Channel for more semi- helpful info.

P.S. Judging by the video clip promo alone, Shatner still consistently and unselfconsciously continues to reveal himself to be a grade A a******. Has the man no self- awareness of his public image whatsoever?!!!
    *Not* "Fascinating". :-)

Would n't miss this one for the world, Daniel. Very nice catch, spotting that this is showing in a local cinema. I'd been wondering where to see this documentary since we don't get the cable channel on which it is also being aired. Once again, you 'da **MAN**!

P.S. You can also catch Mr. Takei's guest interview with Bill Maher on Maher's show via the following YouTube link:
[masked] George Takei on Bill Maher: http://youtu.be/T-Y8OF5WYHk

    This interview on Maher's HBO show took place a couple of weeks ago. I just love listening to Takei talk about almost anything;
he's so good natured, even tempered and clearly thoughtful, as in a thinking man, articulate and well spoken - and clearly loves to laugh. As Ilana recently said to me, "I could happily listen to him read from the dictionary". :-)
