I'm a software engineer at Goodreads. I cycle to work, but I'm also a fan of long-distance leisure rides, and I once took my bike all the way across the country! When I'm not coding, I'm usually reading or writing or cooking.
Goodreads is a mature startup focused on book discovery; we build new communities around reading and enhance existing real-world friendships by highlighting connections between people based on the books they like. We use Ruby on Rails, but like any major website we depend on a lot of different technologies to deliver the best experience for users.
If we're talking locally, it's hard to beat Lake Merced for feeling like you're a million miles away from the city. I like the approach, too -- coming from beachfront one minute to a mountain valley the next. It reminds me how lucky I am to be in California. Nationally, one of the best rides I ever had was on the Katy Trail, an old railroad right-of-way that winds lazily through a few hundred miles of Missouri wine country (who knew there was such a thing?).
