Meetup with the BP and bring tech/start-up to Staten Island

Meet and network with like-minded Staten Island tech and start-up enthusiasts at this excellent networking event at Borough Hall with BP James Oddo. BP Oddo wants to do all he can to help create and foster a thriving and innovative tech community right here on Staten Island. With almost a billion dollars in private investment coming to Staten Island’s North Shore, the city’s and indeed the world’s attention is shifting to Staten Island. The opportunities are limitless. We hope you will participate so that you can share your thoughts and discuss topics related to technology in New York City and Staten Island in particular, including tech jobs and startup companies. The New York City tech industry is the fastest growing in the United States – second only to Silicon Valley – making it a significant economic engine for the city. It is creating high-paying jobs, promoting innovation, and helping to strengthen other core NYC markets, including media, advertising, finance, entertainment, and health care. We want you to join us and become part of the creation of a local community that will affect the growth of the ecosystem and the rapidly expanding NYC tech industry into Staten Island.

Had some suggestions from last night. Hope you dont mind my typical Staten Island advice-offering behavior. (We are a friendly batch LOL)

    Suggestions:
    1. Chairs or places to sit 2. Name tags that break the ice and initiate conversations, such as: - [Name]
    - I am looking for [purpose for being at the Meetup] 3. Successful speakers are great. (ex: I have helped many people use WIX and they spoke last night) But, I would also like to hear start-up stories from new businesses and the challenges they are currently facing.

Down the road, maybe allowing for demos of websites, talks, or ideas at St. George theater. Just sharing some thoughts I had while I was there...

Awesome ideas Steven, a lot of what we have planned coming up is very similar to your suggestions.

Hey no problemo! I have lived here for 40 years (minus a few years for traveling). It would be a pleasure to assist anyway possible.

Glad to have been there last night and to see things finally starting up on SI. What I found helpful last night was getting a handle on what businesses are currently in the startup phase on SI. I did not realize that some were already here. It would be helpful to the group to identify those current businesses on the Island and begin to direct similar people here. They could be the first candidates for a co-working space and building a pipeline that strengthens the community.

As for suggestions, for now don't sweat the small stuff and just keep momentum going.

    Thanks to the organizers.

Thanks everyone for coming out last night. What a great start. It was great meeting you and we promise some fun and educational meetups to come. We will be sending out a questioner on what you guys would like to see for future meetups. I am also looking for bloggers who would be interested in writing for the Startupsi blog. Email me at [masked] if interested.

I give this event a "D" grade because I did not learn anything new and there was no mention of NYS Gov Andrew's "Start Up" program where people may start a "qualifying" business and pay no taxes for ten years.

Sorry to hear :-( stick with us, this is only the first one. We have a lot planned as we grow and if you have any suggestions for future meetups, we want to hear from you. The goal of this first one was to just meet and mingle to get to know each other and make some new connections and relationships.

Sorry to hear that. We would love everyone's input as to what they would like to get information about. Considering it was an hour event, some things were left out to facilitate networking.

Little confused about the location...is the meetup at Borough Hall in St. George? The map is pointing to the golf course, the default location for SI.

    Hey hey!
I have lived around the corner from Borough Hall for the last 17 years, spending the last 7 years working at websites, while getting education at a place called General Assembly at 902 Broadway. Since 2009, I have worked from home, right by the ferry and always having a birds-eye view of the city, all the hurricanes, and SI Yankee Stadium. I travel into NYC to tech incubators and Meetups for networking and education, but I always wanted something like this meetup in Staten Island. Very excited about this! If anyone is traveling to SI for this Meetup and has questions about the area, places to eat, where to go etc. please let me know! It would be awesome to have a borough-supported tech incubator for start-ups on SI.

    Looking forward to this!
    Steven

ps- I love technology but I mainly grew websites through customer service, blogging, and community management.

Are you sometimes discouraged or ready to throw in the towel? Check out this video of Startup Stories which takes a long hard look at failure -- and explains why failure might just be the most important step towards success if you're serious about creating a great startup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lS3o2Pv355U

What have you learned from past failures?

  • Lyle F.

I don't know about you but I'm fired up for our tech Meetup next Tuesday!

I just had a great conversation with Jason Razefsky from the BP office and he is getting a lot of great feedback and support for Tech/StartUp in SI. Within the past few weeks we grew to over 100 StartUP SI Members and 49 RSVP's.

This is incredible considering that a few months ago I was running the group myself and ready to throw in the towel on having anymore Meetups because of low attendance and interest. But, meeting incredible people like James Lopez from the Phat Startup inspired me to keep moving forward because that one connection has proven that we need to meet others with the same passion and form friendships and partnerships that will help us here locally. So, with that in mind, I want to hear from you.
What tech/startup events or educational programs would you like to see here in Staten Island?
This will help us plan for a calendar of monthly Meetups for the next year.

    Cheers,
    Lyle

I'm afull stack web developer, PHP on the backend and the usual HTML/CSS/JavaScript stack on the frontend, born and raised on Staten Island. I wish there were more opportunities to use my talents here on Staten Island, but as far as I can tell the tech community is miniscule. Maybe I'm wrong?

There folks out there that say it can't be done, that we can't build tech and startups on SI. It reminds me of this excerpt from Benjamin Zander's book, The Art of Possibility. A shoe factory sends two marketing scouts to a region of Africa to study the prospects for expanding business. One sends back a telegram saying, SITUATION HOPELESS - STOP - NO ONE WEARS SHOES

The other writes back triumphantly, GLORIOUS BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY - STOP - THEY HAVE NO SHOES

I am writing back and saying:

GLORIOUS BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY - STOP - SI HAS NO STARTUP/TECH

    and

What the heck is a telegram :)

Our company, RealEstateSINY.com is one of the larger tech companies on Staten Island, employing 6 full-time employees, and 9 total employees. 50 independent contractors. We are one of the largest real estate/media company's on Staten Island. And the only full service dot-com real estate company in New York City. Applause for opening the door to great new opportunities, looking forward to it.

Hi all, thanks for the RSVP for this specific event. Yesterday I was in NYC and had an opportunity to get in front of over 100 tech and startup people. I had an opportunity to talk about my own biz or any tech topic. My time however was used to shout out Staten and the great opportunity that is available to them in Staten as startups. I'm not going to lie, tough audience, but if we get serious and get together as a community locally, I know that we will show them that there is a great opportunity here for tech. I look forward to meeting you all and am psyched by the opportunity to work with you all and show the potential that is here in Staten. I would like to take the opportunity to invite everyone on here to use this message board to introduce themselves and start a conversation.
    Cheers,
    Lyle

Suggestion: Lets not worry about businesses outside our borough. Our main focus should be on our own Staten Island businesses as I am sure they will need help when things are busier.

      April 18, 2014

    • Lyle F.

Community development in the tech and startup world needs to be about both internal and external. By bringing in people who are interested in developing their tech and startups on SI we are forming relationships that might not be possible if we just closed the doors. Coworking spaces are excellent examples of where partnerships are formed that created new innovations, also startup weekend events. I think the reason why we have not seen this area even start out here is because we are isolated, we need to showcase Staten and welcome all.

"The word technology means “a better way of doing things.” This is easy to say, but extremely difficult to do. Making a better way of storing information, a better currency, or a better way of making friends means improving on thousands of years of human experience and is therefore extraordinarily difficult. At some level, it would seem logically impossible that anybody could ever improve anything. I mean if nobody from bible days until 2014 has thought of it, what makes you think you are so smart? From a psychological standpoint, in order to achieve a great breakthrough, you must be able to suspend disbelief indefinitely. The technology startup world is where brilliant people come to imagine the impossible."
