Global Hackathon for Social Good : Mobile

Global Hackathon for Social Good : Mobile

Geeklist is really excited to be launching a series of hackathons and meetups around the world. We're going to start off with a global tandem 'Hack for Good' mobile hackathon. What is 'Hack for Good'? Well it means everything built needs to be done to better humanity, support a non-profit/cause or leverage one of our sponsors (or our) API's to do something to make peoples lives better. (Not to try and launch a startup in 40+ hours)

Locations will include San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, Tel Aviv... and if we didn't mention your city contact us and let's launch it up for this event! We have global sponsors and we'll be providing support in any city you request! You can also participate online. The rules and regulations will be posted soon.

Here are the details on the event, timing and San Francisco chapter details.

A Geeklist Hackathon Series 0.1 - June 28th - 30th 2013

With special guest speakers Montana Flynn + Nijiko Yonskai [gl] from Mashape.

We have a slightly different schedule from our normal Meetup Series this time, because it's a big one:

6pm: Meetup with beer, wine, soda, pizza, etc.
7pm: Special guest speakers
8pm-9pm: Hackathon teams form, and hack through the weekend!

Geeklist is kicking off a year-long global hackathon series starting with this event taking place worldwide from June 28th to June 30th. We’re gathering mobile developers, designers and engineers to create apps, make non-profit sites much more useful on mobile, and build solutions that make the world a better place.

We will be hacking in multiple local venues with San Francisco as command central. Participation can also be online for those eager to take part elsewhere alongside everyone.

By taking part in this event or the entire series you will be helping build apps and make non-profit sites mobile-friendly around the world.

Themes will include hacking to help:
Disaster and Emergency solutions - Education and Learning - Workplace and Jobs - Poverty and Hunger

Our special guest speakers on Friday, June 28th will be:
Montana Flynn - API hustler, Recovering PHP Dev, JavaScript Fanatic, Creating a New API Economy at Mashape
Nijiko Yonskai - Author of the OAuth Bible, JavaScript Expert, Founder of Parsify, Full-Stack Warrior at Mashape

This is a mobile focused event so hacking will be for Android, iOS, Windows Phone or with our special event partners Moovweb! You will be able to hack on the Geeklist API’s, some of our sponsors API’s and/or a number of non-profits to be announced.

You can also use Moovweb [gl], which gives you the ability to make websites mobile-ready without any API’s or access needed to their servers. We will be providing a list of 20+ non-profits you can use Moovweb to build a mobile-friendly version for. The great thing is you’ll be helping non-profits go mobile!

If you have any non-profits in mind you think could use some hacker love please let us know and we will add them to the list!

When: Official Kickoff is 6pm (PST) on Friday, June 28th (Each time zone will have their own kick off at 6pm their local time) and runs until closing at noon (local time) on Sunday, June 30th. Official Judging will begin at noon (PST) in San Francisco

Where: Location will be shared with accepted hackers and geeks.

Why: Because “hacker” is not a bad word... we want to show the world the good we can do!

Who: Anyone who is a software engineer, mobile engineer or designer

What: PRIZES!!! There will be $1,000’s in cash prizes, give-aways, gift cards and more. The prizes will be local and with a global winner.
This is about doing good and building cool stuff, join us and have a blast!
