For those of you who are considering beekeeping, here is a list of equipment I started with:

The easy-to-assemble top bar hive I purchased:
http://www.ebay.com/i...

Other equipment:
-a protective jacket or suit and gloves
-a mini crow bar
-bar of wax
-smoker
-pail with a filter to harvest my honey: http://www.mannlakelt...
- And the bees, of course: I ordered a package of bees. Ask for a marked queen as she will be easier to spot for a novice. Google: bee packages for sale 2012
You can have them shipped or pick them, if local. Order them as soon as you can because they do sell out.

Anyone else want to share their list?

How do you keep the bees in your own yard. Do many stray to neighbor's yards? Has anyone had that problem
This is a serious question, not a joke. I'm very new at this bee board.

Hi, I ordered a nuc from White Oak Apiary out of Brewster. He has standard nucs and top bar nucs for sale. Nucs are somewhat easier as the bees have no down time. It will take a package an extra 20 days or so to get started. With a nuc, you just drop the frames into your hive and hang on.

Let's see if I can help with a few answers
Bees have a range of over 2 miles from their hive. They return to the hive at dusk (as well as many times during the day with nectar and pollen). They will fly where they will fly. A water source like a birdbath with stones or bricks in it should be readily available in proximity to the hive, so they will be less likely to go to your neighbor's pool.
On 'stray to neighbor's yards': Dependent on whether there is a water source (pool, or the like) and whether there is any flowering plants, which they will only go to while in bloom. The guy who taught me beekeeping has 4 hives on the roof of a rowhouse, and the neighbor suns himself during the summer on the adjoining roof. The neighbor only noticed the bees after about 4 years... they really have no interest in anyone who is not in their flight path to and from their pursuit of nectar.
Does this help?

The nuc is good for a conventional hive. They don't sell them, to my knowledge, for a top bar hive.

Hi,
Nucs for top-bar hives are available! Got this off Craig's List...
http://whiteoakapiary...
We will also be offering the option of ordering a 2 frame top-bar beehive for $120.00 as well, available for pick up the third week of May and later. They will come with 2 drawn out frames, 3lbs+ of bees, an already accepted and laying queen, pollen, honey, and brood. You will need to bring your top bar hive with you the day of pick up and put the frames into them. You can buy the whole hive frames and all but we will need to know ahead of time. Also there is no set frame size so if you anticipate taking this option please let us know what size hive you use and we will plan accordingly. Contact Mike at 845-six-six-one-5730 for more info.
