Snug Harbor Late Winter

The first of a few trips we could take to Snug Harbor this year. As the seasons change, so does the magnificent landscape. Let's take a leisurely stroll around the grounds and see what our cameras can capture during the winter season before all the trees and plants have bloomed. We will meet by the small pond list as #16 on the map found on the following link ..... Map

  • John V.

As many know, we usually go for a bite afterwards ... so I'm gonna suggest either Leidy's Shore Inn or Adobe Blues. Any cares/ideas/suggestions/etc?

    February 24, 2014

  • DeHaven C.

Did you plan on us meeting up at the Cultural Center?

    February 25, 2014

    • John V.

Didn't really think about that part ... I usually park in the lot near the duck pond. So maybe by the little pond?

      February 25, 2014

    • DeHaven C.

Thanks John. That was my thought too. Nice place to take pictures while we wait for everyone to gather.

I'll be only one coming in by bus from ferry terminal, so if everyone else is arriving by car please just let me know which parking lot. Duck Pond? Little Duck Pond? Only been there once for Botanical Gardens.

    February 25, 2014

  • Monzeeki

hey y'all! is it easy to walk there from the ferry per chance? my class friend will also be joining me.

    February 24, 2014

    • John V.

It is walkable .... not real close ... but not too far.(Sorry) You can also just take the S/40 from the ferry terminal, it will drop you off right in front.

      February 24, 2014

    • DeHaven C.

Hi Zeeki, so glad you're coming. Under normal conditions, I can only take one person, but if you can sit on your friend's lap, I can pick you both up. You wouldn't be uncomfortable for long.

Rent a jazzy or a wheel chair

Hoping to make this. Signed up, but recovering from foot surgery, so it depends on how feel by then. Optimistic. Looking forward to catching up with this group. Missed many outings this season

i never knew you could go inside the little cottages, does it have to be pre-arranged?

    January 19, 2014

  • Hope W.

Thanks, Jean! Perhaps they would? Tried last night to go online to their web site, but "could not be found" to see when they open and let them know we'd come as a group March 8th.

That is really a shame bc they used to have wonderful detailing in those small "rooms" in the Garden. Especially carving in the woodwork. I hope the mosaics are still intact. And their stone formations. For me it has been over ten years since I last saw them. Everyone is suffering from lack of funding to maintain structures, especially after Sandy.

  • Ed J.

I spend a lot of time at Snug Harbor and they have not been taken good care of the Garden buildings. They need some work, but still worth going

The Chinese Scholar's Garden we have here is the only authentic one in the entire United States! It was done by a 92-year-old Chinese man and he used old broken beer bottle inlays for the glass mosaics (greens, browns). Learned that when I went for the first time maybe ten years ago! You'll love it there!

    1 · January 18, 2014

  • DeHaven C.

I have never been to the Chinese Gardens!!! Wanted to go before they were even open and this group went just days before I joined, almost a year ago. Thanks John. Good idea.

    January 18, 2014

Sometimes the gate to Chinese Scholar Garden is left open during off-season. I bet they would do it for us if we asked. Love to walk thru wetlands - lots of wildlife.

The purple buds are a lovely contrast against the bare brown branches at the Chinese Scholars Garden but cannot remember if I saw them in March or April. I think the others there are plum trees? Thanks for the suggestion, John.

    January 17, 2014

  • Jimmy M.

John this sounds like a great idea , Looking forward to spring

    January 17, 2014

  • John V.

I'm going to suggest a Meet-up here in March. We currently dont have anything for the month. There are alot of meetups planned for springtime so maybe we can schedule another walk through Snug after other dates are set.

    2 · January 17, 2014

  • Hope W.

Yes, good idea! The Chinese Scholars Garden will have the Korean Azalea and another with their purple buds in early spring!!

    1 · January 17, 2014

What about early Spring Just when things are starting to bloom

    January 17, 2014

  • Hope W.

Yes, thanks! Just let us know the date!

    January 17, 2014

  • Olga

Yes!!! Can it please be on a weekend? All seasons are beautiful at snug Harbor, so the sooner, the better :)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
