Fleet Week -- Parade of Ships

The Parade of Sail marks the official beginning of Fleet Week, with a parade of ships entering the New York Harbor from below the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and making their way around to Manhattan's west side. I will be parked down on Front St. I'm thinking if we get members in different locations we won't all have the same photos to share, so location is open to your preference on this one.

I loved it bc I knew the amt of ships to be in Parade and I chose the Bluff at Ft Hamilton and just added 31 pix. I will add some more later. I'll be a Tour Guide Saturday from 1 to 6 at Pier 92 on the USCGC Campbell, and Sunday 1-6 at Homeport Pier on SI on USCGC Katherine Walker, and all day Memorial Day at the Intrepid Pier for the Search and Rescue demo (Pier 86) , the unfurling of the 100' flag and at the PA booth in my Uniform. Support those whose sacrifice makes it possible for us to be photogaphers and move around freely! (Note: those in Uniiform get FREE transportation on MTA until end of Memorial Day) Remember the USCG SAVES LIVES, and does not TAKE LIVES!!

Great pics, I am curious to know the location you shot those awesome pics. Good work

Just about a total waste of time! There were only a total of 5 ships, 3 Navy and 2 Coast Guard!

I was hoping for a bigger show also Frank, maybe next year. Still, I had fun with the Front Street group.

Look forward to seeing everyone's photos from today's shoot. I think it will be fun to have a variety of points of view. Thanks for that clever suggestion John.

Yesterday I went to Ft Hamilton to get permission from ARMY PA person (I got it bc I am also PA with Military ID) but it might rain tomorrow morning! "No Parking" signs were up for Wednesday. Security might be an issue, so better to go along the Belt Parkway.

Appreciate the offer, but have a commitment that a.m., otherwise wld. jump at the chance. Enjoy.

Location is ideal for photos - parking is almost impossible on a normal day. Consider taking bus over bridge & get off at 4th Av. & 92nd St., then walk to 100th St & Shore Rd. (8 short blocks).

Jean, thank you for the input. I'll try to be there very early. If I have to walk a mile I'll walk a mile.

Good strategy Raf - just takes extra time, energy & tolls. You should get great photos.

First ..... There is a "REPLY" button below each comment if you want to reply to a certain comment... it helps the flow of the convo. Second .... I've been to Fort Wadsworth for the 'Parade' and although it does offer a nice view it gets too crowded for me. (Here's a few shots from 2012 ... https://www.flickr.com/photos/76230977@N06/sets/72157629869479246/) If you plan on going near the Alice Austin House you better get there at least 2 hours early if you want to park within one mile.

I've decided I will be along Front St. ... staying local, full view of the bridge and the city, down low so it's a different angle for myself, easy parking ... I can even sit right on my tailgate or if I want a higher perspective I can stand in the bad of my truck.

John, I like your idea along Front St. I think I will give it a try. Don't know just where, but will look for you. I plan to bring my big old[masked]mm mirror lens and tripod!

The shortest distance between Anchorage Channel (if that is the channel Navy will use) is by Shore Road Parks Conservancy in Brkln. It seems that best places to park are Oliver Street or 92nd street or
Shore road between those streets. There are pedestrian bridge over Belt Pkwy. This is a map research, not boots on the ground, but Google maps usually pretty reliable. Most likely it would be crowded and to secure the best location and allow for contingency delays I will try to be there by 7:30-8am. If time allows I may try to get there Monday or Tuesday for reconnaissance, but not sure if time allows. Please advise if I am wrong regarding this location or join me if it seems right.

Does any one tried or consider Edge water Street or Edge water Drive?

    May 16, 2014

    • John V.

The only accessible place on Edgewater is by Alice Austin house. You must go very early if you drive. There is not much parking and it is a popular spot

Will try to get in few shots while I'm driving through Rosebank area.

I went to check out Ft. Wadsworth today. There is enough room for about 200 photographers. The vz bridge is a great back drop. You can take photos front and back of the ships as they pass. There is plenty of parking . They my have restrooms.

You're right! Ft Hamilton did a salute with their guns, and the ship fired back! Made my heart stop! That was two years ago and I was on a patrol boat under the VNB. Bklyn is better for the sun. Maybe just in the Park next to the Belt Parkway where they fly kites, or else the 69th Street Pier in Bay Ridge?

I think the ferry is not yet open to the public until Memorial Day. They are open to Harbor School and to the Turner Construction guys working on the southern end of Gov Is. After Memorial Day they operate Fri, Sat, Sun for the public if it is the same as last year.

We can view from up high at Fort Wadsworth or we can tailgate along Front St for a sea level view. During past "Parades" Fort Wadsworth does get quite crowded... I never tried along Front St but there is tons of room there.

Oh, too bad about the close off. To throw in a new thought... is there any cool and easy access point in Brooklyn? Maybe from their fort? The sun would be in a better position, I think. We could all meet at the fort parking lot and pile in one car and drive over the bridge.

      May 7, 2014

    • DeHaven C.

If Brooklyn doesn't work, I vote for Austen House and walking as far as possible toward the bridge. There are some cool shots even without the ships. John, thanks again for being so thorough and such a great "Organizer".

How about govenors jsland photo walk?

    May 6, 2014

  • Hope W.

I think the spot at Ft Wadsworth is good. Alice Austen might be too crowded unless we are down on the rocks or beach or on the driftwood! Van Breisen was OK two weeks ago with growth but not been there recently. THANKS!!!!

We can park by Alice Austen house , Hylan Blvd.

i guess von briesen park would be too crowded? i lived down there years ago, and don't remember huge crowds, maybe i went off peak...

    May 5, 2014

    • John V.

I've been in there a few times over the past couple of years and unfortunately the look-out points were kind of overgrown. I havent been there lately though.

I have a woodworking class at 12:30,but may be able to skip it. Do we need tickets?

    May 5, 2014

    • John V.

No tickets ... just watching the ships enter the harbor.

      May 5, 2014

  • willie s.

I'll be there. where do we meet?
