Mt. Diablo State Park (Summit Hike)

This hike is rated"DIFFICULT". You need to be in very good physical condition to attend. Total elevation gain is approximately 3500ft, about 12 miles long and I estimate that it will take 6 hrs to complete. On the day of the hike you must bring a 2 liter capacity water pack or equivalent of water bottles in a backpack, lunch and snacks, sturdy hiking shoes and hiking poles are recommended for those of you that use them. This is an extremely strenuous hike with slippery steep shale sections but the rewards when you reach the summit make this hike well worth the effort.

The following is a quote from the California Parks and Recreation Department " From the Golden Gate to the Farallon Islands, from the High Sierra to the Central Valley—this is the sweeping panorama you can savor from atop Mount Diablo. Geographers claim that hikers can see more of the earth’s surface from the top of Mount Diablo than from any other peak in the world with only one exception: Africa’s legendary 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro". HowAMAZING is that, and right in our own backyard!!!

NOTE: Out of consideration for others, please don't try to hike beyond your own capabilities. Mt. Diablo State Park doesn't allow dogs within the park boundaries.

Kirk and Chris...thanks so much for all your support to make this hike a great one. First trip the top of Mt. Diablo and I wouldn't have gotten there any other way!

It was the perfect day for this great hike! The wild flowers were such a treat. Thanks Kirk and Chris for planning the hike. I don't think you could have picked a better day. Kirk, an extra thanks for your interesting factoids of Mt. Diablo. Chris, an extra big thanks for being the sweep and hanging back with me on the way up.

This was my first time at Mt Diablo. The hiking was challenging but it was soon rewarded with spectacular view at the summit. After yesterday rain, the air was so fresh and clean, and temperture was cool. It was a gorgeous and perfect day for hiking.

Thanks Kirk and Chris for organizing this event. I look forward to another one.

Yes, I hope this hike is rain or shine because I'm cancelling my bike ride (don't want to get my bike wet).

Kirk...you're definitely the Mt. Diablo guru. Is this rain going to affect the hike tomorrow?

    April 25, 2014

    • Kirk H.

I think we're going to be fine. The hike is on unless we wake up to heavy rain which is extremely unlikely.

    Possibly?
