Let's have tea and refreshment in the new year.

We'll have tea -- or whatever -- and conversation to start with and get to know each other a bit!  See you then.

In response to questions: Steampunk "regalia" fully optional.  Some of us will be longing to dress up, others not so much.  I think we need to feel comfortable in a diverse group that covers the cherished alternative past, alternative future, and the present (such as it is.) Some, such as myself, are only now building their kit and getup.  I would love it if people brought favorite books, lists of films and ideas for future meet-ups.

I had hoped to stick to a coffee shop -- but our numbers grew such that there was not one that was large enough.  The pub is cozy and offers a wider variety of both beverages and foods.

Hilary, if you do decide to try Monday or Sunday nights, I know I'd be interested since Tuesdays are hard for my schedule too sometimes. I'm so glad you started this group. I think the location for tonight was very cozy and it was nice to meet such a lovely and eclectic group of people. I am already looking forward to the next one. - Mary

Had the bestest of best of times- of all times, (to include those forgot, and yet to be remembered from futures past and certainly those having not occurred yet)! TYSM! A grand and most most enjoyable event i shant neglect to recall for many times to come, or go; as the case may be!

I have a later work dinner in the city tonight, I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it over all. I'll do what I can

Just a little FYI from one organizer to another: If you ever want to hold a meetup a little farther north in the future for this group, I highly recommend Jason's Deli in Vernon Hills (or any Jason's Deli). They can usually handle bigger groups, the menu is affordable, and they even have free icecream near the salad bar. (I've used them for a couple of years for a group that I run myself and they never seem to mind how long we stay. Very comfortable seating, and you can actually hear each other talk without it being too loud)

Great idea. I like Jason's Deli -- especially if dinner is involved. I graze salad bars blissfully. I just want the travel to be easy for folks coming on Metra.

Totally understand. One of the reasons I still pick the Vernon Hills location is it's close to the Libertryville train station if I need to pick any members up. It's also close to the Vernon Hillls stop but that Metra station schedule is a little more limited during the week. I look forward to checking out the spot you chose though. I might use that for my own group since I'm always looking for location ideas.

Any idea how late things may go? I've got a meeting in St. Charles that night but if I hurry it along, I may be able to make it up before things wind down.

    January 6, 2013

I think that we will formally end at 10. People may choose to hang out longer if they please.

Are we sure that the venue will hold the size that the group is growing to be?

      January 5, 2013

    • Hilary J.

A good call on the space.

      January 6, 2013

  • Hilary J.

This space will be large enough for the number that have RSVP's thus far. It is a pub, restaurant. I wanted to avoid a bar this time -- but Biggby's was a bit small, once I drove there. This should be a fun place, quieter on a Tuesday and they are reserving the back room for us so we can talk.

    January 5, 2013

  • Hilary J.

I will call them and see how large the space is and if we can arrange things so we can mingle easily. I am open to other ideas on places in the Northwest Suburbs and near the train line for those traveling by train. And, I will post back tomorrow if Biggby's is a problem.

So is this a formal steampunk event as in outfit required?

    December 29, 2012

    • Greg J.

I don't know about anyone else, but I will be streapunked up, definitely. any excuse to wear a fez...

    • Hilary J.

I am comfortable with folks coming as they wish. In regalia or not. No Pressure -- no measure. I admit to being torn myself.... So few places to get dressed and go out. At the same time, it is just a fine opportunity to simply meet, talk, and build the beginnings of a network for the future.

      December 30, 2012

  • Al S.

I too may be relatively "plain"

    1 · December 30, 2012

I don't know if I'll be "Dressed" for the occasion. Sounds like fun meeting some new faces, and seeing my already friends.

    2 · December 30, 2012

I will be there in my steampunk best and I might be bringing some friends.

    1 · December 29, 2012

I am glad to see so many people coming! I am looking forward to this. I am hopeful that there will be some way to have an island of imagination out here in the Northwest Suburbs. We'll start with tea and get creative!

If the group had a teleporter, trasmat beam, or tardis I'd come; having 18 miles of stop lights on Golf Road I'll think about it.

Might be too far north for me. I live on the South Side of Chicago and do not have a vehicle. A bit of a walk from the nearest PACE or Metra stops.

The first meeting does not have to be in any period dress. We could just meet and discuss interests, book recommendations etc.

while not specifically steam punk - i am hosting an event on the 21st i would like to see some of you attend. it will be an absinthe dinner party, with a good variety of art as well as entertainment. details available at gourmetvore.eventbrite.com Hope to see some of you here for it.

    December 15, 2012

  • Hilary J.

I plan to wait for a couple more folks -- but not many and then set up a date in January. I have a place we can meet for tea, treats, the freedom to dress as we are in our mind's eyes and talk. It is very cool that you can build things. I am not skilled at building -- but would love to learn more about doing that.
