You don't have to be costumed to come to an event. Many of us got our start after showing up to an event in jeans and a T-shirt, meeting people and asking questions. The hardest part of Steampunk is getting past the nervousness of coming to your first event. Worse case scenario, you might get shot by a steam-powered photonic arrester (you would probably just call it a camera), but more likely you'll make some new friends and have an awesome time.
