Del Rey Workshop: "Ukulele Blues Party"

SCU Ukulele Workshop with Del Rey, 11 am, Saturday, April 5

Calliope is one of SCU's best sponsors. They are bringing in Del Rey for a concert at the Roots Cellar on Thursday, April 3. She'll be playing her resonator uke, the one in the photo below. It has D tuning, she says. This is a big week for ukesters in Pittsburgh, but let's get out in support of this traveling artist. And if you haven't signed up for Del Rey's workshop this coming Saturday morning, better hop to it. Please get that check to Jack or Marlene asap, ok?

Calliope - The Pittsburgh Folk Music‎

“I never heard of Del Rey. What do “ukulele blues” sound like, anyhow? I wonder if I’ll like her teaching style. I dunno, I wonder if I should even go to this workshop. I can’t decide.”

Is that you? Would a preview be helpful?

Here’s Del Rey teaching “Brown’s Blues”, a sample tune from "Blue Uke - Blues, Rags and Jazzy Dance Tunes".  If you don’t “get” some of the references, it’s because the clip is from the end of a teaching class.

Ok. That’s what ukulele blues sound like. That’s what Del Rey looks like. You know you always take away something good from every workshop.  Sign up now.

Del Rey Workshop: Ukulele Blues Party.        Be there or be square.

Sugar Ray was a boxer. Fay Wray played the female lead in King Kong. Man Ray was a Modernist artist. Del Rey is a Ragtime and Blues ukulele master, and she’s coming to Pittsburgh. She’ll give a Calliope-sponsored concert in their Roots Cellar (Fifth and Shady Aves.) on Thursday, April 3. Concert info HERE. At 11 am, on Saturday, April 5, she will lead a 75 minute workshop for SCU, adapting her unique guitar style to the ukulele.

“Ukulele Blues-Party Workshop” teaches 1920s-style Blues for finger-style ukulele. If you are comfortable with first position chords (those are the chords we all play on the first 4 frets) and can keep in time when changing between them, this workshop is for you. She’ll teach an introduction to right hand finger-picking and demonstrate what makes a song "blue".

Cost of this workshop is $25 per person.  Payment for this Workshop should be by check or cash to Marlene or Jack prior to the workshop. If you want to use PayPal, or need to mail a check, please contact Jack by e-mail.

Although walk-ins are welcome if space is still available, we would appreciate it if you either RSVP or e-mail me to let me know. We need to set the room up for the correct number of participants, and there is a limit. Please NOTE that we cannot accept checks on the day of the workshop; if you have not paid in advance, please plan to pay at the door with CASH. See you on Saturday.

Hi Jack, Thanks for your response. This is my first sign up with Meet Up and the RSVP seemed to be attached to that. I will not attend as I would have preferred to give you more notice, but thank you for your kind offer. As a novice, I am also concerned that this may be a more advanced get together. I will look forward to future events. All the best to you, Rose
