First Uke Jam of 2013

Agenda and Playlist Now Included - click on "LEARN MORE"

Come to Hambone's Pub early for a bite or snack, a refreshment, to socialize, and tune up. We play from 5 to 7 pm. Bring "The Daily Ukulele: 365 Songs" by Jim Beloff, if you have a copy. And please bring your music stand. Drew, our leader for this jam, will call the songs. If you have a song you know well and want to play, bring 20 copies, and you will lead that number.

Jam Agenda: From Drew .....

As "leader of the pack" / facilitator for the SCU "Jam at Hambones" on January 27, I would like to see us start off with a few familiar warm-up songs from "The Daily Ukulele: 365 Songs," Five Foot Two" (page 82) video, "Edelweiss" (page 75) video , and maybe one or two more.

Then let's try a small tribute to "The Day The Music Died" (February 3, 1959) with a couple of Buddy Holly tunes and one by Ritchie Valens: "Donna," "Everyday," "Oh Boy," and "That'll Be The Day". You can click on each song name here for a printable file or you can find them each in the FILES section of this MeetUp page. You can also download a complete playlist for this Jam at January 2013 Jam Playlist.

Then let's go 'round the circle and jam to your suggestions. Either you can kick off the song, or someone else can kick it off for you. If you want to do a song that is new to the group, please bring extra printed copies.

Finally, we will make time for anyone who wants to share a song that they are working on. We all enjoy hearing a new tune.

The goal is to keep it simple and HAVE FUN!

Looking forward to a great first "Jam at Hambones." Drew.

What a great group of people. They made me feel at home, and Hambone's food was good!

A great group of Ukers turned out. We played many favorites from "The Daily Uke," as well as some other tunes. I counted 16 Ukes, but many potential Uke players were there without their instrument.

The best part of a jam like this is that everyone has input. Have a favorite song? We'll do it. Everyone doesn't have to play every song, just play what you're comfortable with and think about learning the rest. It's all about having ukulele fun in a social setting. Have you been working on a song that you'd like to share with the group? We'll be happy to listen and maybe join you too. I don't get to the 'burgh for every regular meeting so, I hope to see a lot of the SCU regulars and hopefully some new faces and ukuleles in the group at the jam. That's the point!

I've only been playing Uke for about 4 months. I find playing with a group to be lots of fun, and I definitely go home with a smile on my face. Practicing is one thing, but playing with a group teaches me better strumming, and I just seem to be able to switch chords better. There is no pressure if I miss a chord - nobody knows. And everybody is so friendly and supportive. I always go home with much more confidence. Thank you SCU.

Hi Lisa: Welcome to SCU. Nothing to be terrified about. You can play along at the Jam as your skill allows - there will be no pressure. Some recommendations: Obtain a copy of "The Daily Ukulele: 365 Songs," and use the internet to learn some basic songs and chords. SCU has novice, expert, and everything in between; with experts more than willing to give you help and advice. See you in January.
