Wanted..people to try Nations... (5 Player Max)

So, yes...I finally cracked and couldn't resist a purchase at the UK Games Expo. I managed to resist hundreds of games, but ended up buying one - Nations:
Current bgg stats:
Avg ranking: 8.0
Strategy Board Game Rank: 26
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/126042/nations

Although the game plays up to 5, I think we should have a max 4 players (me, plus 3 others), since it can apparently be long at first. Also, there's receommendations for starting with the 'A' sides of the player boards, and the 'basic' card sets, for the first game. Anyways, if you like the sound of it, sign up, and we'll sort a date/time in the usual way (i.e. lengthy discussions!).

Well that game sucked ass. Total bummer for anyone else who purchased a copy at the show and has been dying to play it... ;-)

Here they are. No players were shot or otherwise harmed in the making of these photos.

Cheers John - I notice you even had time for a pun or two!

OK - so a very rare thing happened at this meetup....
    1. I won!
    2. John came last!

Scores: Me, 41, Kim 40 (and would have been 41 also if he'd had just one more coin, food, stone, strength, book, or stability!), Guy (who had never really played a 'proper' board game before) 37, John, 31.

In fact, for much of the game, Guy had 2 military buildings and only 3 regular buildings, but somehow he managed to keep his resource engine going (in fact, he regularly had loads of food) and if he'd staged a few more wars earlier (taking at least a victory point off the rest of us) might well have won! I guess he could buy battles for resources, and having a 'raid' value of 6 helps! Plus he could capture colonies due to his military strength..?

All in all, good fun and perhaps we can try the ' B' sides next time, with the expert cards as well (must remember that last player in turn order at the beginning gets to choose their nation first)...

Played it last night, and good news....it's a keeper (for me, anyway). :-)

crap, is that the time already? I may be a few mins late as well... ;-)

Just bumped this back up to the top in the hope we can get maybe 1 more person. 5 is probably a bit much for the first game, not sure how it plays with 3...

It was all that talk of snacks in the other thread that did it... 8-)

Can't beat some sweet & salted popcorn! :-)

I'm going to have to drop out I'm afraid - I'm going on a day trip to France on Saturday - leaving home at 5am, and I'm not man enough to do this and that! Sorry!

    June 10, 2014

    • Tony C.

Cheers for letting us know Simon - have a good trip!

      June 11, 2014

  • Tony C.

And then there were 3 - although 3's fine so long as no more drop out!

Note (to self as much as anyone else): We'll need to decide whether to play with the A-Sides fo the player boards (recommended for first few plays) and basic vs. advanced/expert cards (although I think with 5 players we might have to use all cards).
Advanced/Expert cards increase interest/interaction, but can be more difficult to preapre for in the game - e.g. "The advanced and expert cards in general are a bit of a wider swing on things (for buildings/military) and a bit more global effects that can force others to respond to your stuff. They aren't "more powerful" as much as they are wider variety. "

It's the difficulty in trying to decide whether 'A' sides plus basic card set will result in people not being interested enough for a second play...hmmm....

[since we're all experienced gamers now..perhaps even me!] ;-)

I'd love to, I also purchased Nations over the weekend. Apparently I'm too late though.

Duncan, if you are driving the Focus I recommend you get it tuned before the start time. And maybe a new set of tyres. Good luck, the hopes of SBC ride with you ;-)

Cheers Tony, only I am going in my even more venerable motor home. It will need more than just a tune...

I am RSVPing, again with the caveat that I may have to drop out last minute, depending on the date. So If anyone is interested and joined the wishlist, I can switch places! ;)

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it after all due to work... I hope I'll get another chance to play nations! ;)

      June 9, 2014

    • Tony C.

Hi Sarantis - no problem, I'm sure you will! :-)

How about next Friday - there's a bit of a gap between pingreen and asda.

    June 3, 2014

    • john

ok, so shall we say Friday, starting with game setup and rule explaining from 7-8, then starting the game at 8? Or is there another day (Tuesday/Thursday) that would be better?

      June 4, 2014

    • Tony C.

Friday is better for me, if that's OK with everyone else (it won't matter so much if it runs long)....

      June 4, 2014

  • Duncan H.

Sounds good TC. Count me in.

    June 3, 2014
