I lost - therefore not good. However I got to play a new game - therefore good.

It doesn't pay to be late does it.
Still the highlight of the evening was Betrayal oin House on the hill . Great fun! Dave made a great Mad scientist, lol! King of Tokyo and Zombie dice were fun too. Good job we have the short game group thats all I can say.

    January 12, 2013

    • Tony A.

Yeah, guess if you want to avoid luck/dice K of T and Zombie Dice aren't the way to go! Quite jealous of Betrayal, tho. It is a game that tends to polarize opinion but I would love to try it if only to see how the mechanic of discovering/creating the story works. I like Mansions of Madness but Betrayal always sounds more freeform.

      January 12, 2013

    • Henry

I'll bring Betrayal next time. I can understand why it polarises opinion: it can seem a little over-dramatic. It works best if everyone's really into it. Best played in a dark room by candlelight! Also, you can't really judge it by one play: there are 50 scenarios, and some are much better than others (of the ones I've come across).

  • Mark H.

Well that was lots of fun. The game I thought would be half-session turned out to be 4 hour job. Very impressed how balanced Chaos turned out - just before turn-limit deadline four players all had a chance of winning and in the end came down to subtle (desperate) plays to claw a few extra points to break a tiebreaker.
The horned rat didn't fair as well but I suspect almost impossible for new player to win with skaven as seems you need to understand and have experience of the flow of the game very well to take advantage.

Also the game mechanics make it thematically brilliant. Each god ended up playing very much to their character.

That's on my list for the next meetup... 8-)

I would also say in this games favour that the 4 main powers seemed to have very specific ways to play. This means that whilst it is on the more complex side, after the first turn you get a clear sense of what you need to do to win. My perception may be coloured by having the simplest faction but I would say after the second turn every player was making clear decisions ( rather than staring at the board wondering what to do). The different factions should also add to replay value I imagine.

Good Fun. Helps if you win :) Merchants and Marauders is a very good game. Several different strategies/strategy combinations to drive the game. Took a while to get to grips with as all 4 of us had not played before. One drawback is during the early stages there is little player interaction. That changed... Would definitely play again.

    • Tony A.

Arrrr, Black John Redbeard is unleashed! Unfortunately, if anyone wuz robbed it was me - you shouldn't have been able to attack me in port after all - my fault tho, I had looked at the NPC hunting and they come after you in port but for combat you have to scout and you can't scout for ships in port. Confused? I obviously was......just like a pirate to take advantage!

      January 12, 2013

    • john

har! that will teach you to read the rules wrong matey!

      January 12, 2013

  • john

Finally got to play Merchants & Marauders (Marauding turned out to be much more fun, but don't tell Daniel I said that) though after the 4 hours we had probably only got halfway through. 4 of us playing that, 5 playing Chaos, and another table of 5 playing I think 3 different games so a well attended and varied evening. Several new members too, so hopefully we'll see them again...

    January 11, 2013

    • Tony A.

A lollipop woud have been nice, John, very nice. As far as I could tell combat is generally very dependent on the seamenship stat which is why (with the highest starting seamanship you can have) you were pretty darn good at it! Now off to bed and dreams......mmmmm, lollipop.....

      January 12, 2013

    • john

Didn't really help against the Spanish though. But Redbeard will return... coming to an ocean near you soon.

      January 12, 2013

  • Daniel P.

Awesome again. Lots of fun playing chaos in the old world. Very well balanced game and very close!

    January 11, 2013

  • David J.

Okay everyone is bringing like a bazillion different games so i won't bother this time. Plus my games aren't really 'club proof' at the moment ie no plastic covers etc. Do they need to be? Still planning to come (just me i think) but just got in so might be a bit late. Haven't played most of the games mentioned so I'm going to be one of those annoying people :-) that will need an explanation of rules i'm afraid

    January 11, 2013

    • john

any idea roughly how late? are we talking 10 mins or an hour? if it's not long we can maybe delay the start of one of the games. just post it here. and I think a lot of us will be reading the rules tonight so don't worry...

      January 11, 2013

    • David J.

Just finished tea on my way miight even just be minutes!

      January 11, 2013

  • Ines

Just to let you know that I am a "Maybe" - depends if I get off work in time. Hoping to make it!

    January 9, 2013

    • john

Yes, now the new year is out of the way we should be back to the 1st friday of the month again...

      January 11, 2013

    • Mark H.

Don't worry I set it to repeat automatically a while back so first Friday of every month is booked in perpetuity.

      January 11, 2013

  • Daniel P.

I want to play merchants and marauders, chaos in the old world, Spartacus and race for the galaxy. Does anyone have a cloning machine?

    January 10, 2013

    • Paul H.

Doesn't work for me, Last few sessions, everybody's been looking at what we've been playings. Games are so subjective not a spectators sport.

      January 11, 2013

    • Paul H.

I will turn up and fit in with what is available as usual.

      January 11, 2013

  • john

Mark, meetup has a feature (group tools/email) where you specifically email those that haven't RSVP'd to a particular meetup. Might be worth emailing those people only to see if you can get a few more people along.

    January 10, 2013

    • john

I've seen several RSVPs over the last few days but we're still on 14... we seem to be gaining and losing people in equal measure. ho hum.

      January 10, 2013

    • john

      wow, 25 total rsvp's - that's got to be a record... :)

      January 11, 2013

  • Henry

Obviously I have the map, but is there anything I particularly need to know about finding the place? Is it obvious from the road?

    January 11, 2013

    • john

click on 'pingreen community centre' near the top of this post, that gives you a map, I've just edited it so the green arrow should now accurately represent where the building is... Basically you drive down archer road and look for the pub (king pin?), when you see it turn off there and park in the pub car park.

      January 11, 2013

    • john

then, on foot, aim for the gap between the pub and the other building, you should now come out into an area with a row of shops (shop?) down the right side. Just walk past the shop(s) and the centre is dead ahead...

      January 11, 2013

  • Henry

Looking forward to it! I've just started getting into board games in the last year or so, and don't have enough people round here to play them with! Not sure what I'll bring yet. Anyone played (and like) Betrayal?

    January 9, 2013

    • Mark H.

Hi and welcome. Is that "Betrayal in house on hill" or something else? Never played it, but read about it and sounds lots of fun. Bring along something(s) you like and see if anyone interested. Should be at least a dozen people so probably going to be three or four games on at once. I'm pretty game for anything, although I want to give Chaos in Old World a chance (and netrunner is burning a hole in my pocket so to speak, but only 2 player)

      January 9, 2013

    • Henry

Yes, that's the one: http://www.boardgameg.... I'll bring it along. It can be good, can be bad. There are something like 40 different scenarios, and the one that gets (randomly) chosen decides how the game plays: some are better than others.

      January 9, 2013

  • Daniel P.

Completely off topic but mark I took the liberty of adding boardgamegeek to your list of useful sites. Anyone who hasn't been there yet must go so they can convert all their hard earned cash into bits of cardboard.

    January 9, 2013

    • Mark H.

Cool. I'm very happy for people to post and add stuff to the site. Boardgamegeek is THE place for everything you need to know, although as you say it can be dangerous to the wallet.

      January 9, 2013

  • Mark H.

Talking about rules - if anyone has idea what they'd like to play from stuff mentioned so far let me know and I can post rulebook if people like to get head start.
If not, not a problem as I am fairly confident I can explain them OK.
    To entice people:

I just found the rules to M&M so if anyone wants to prep before here they are:-
    www.zmangames.com/.../files/merchants_marauders/MM-Rules.pdf

    January 8, 2013

    • john

      Mmmmm... M&M's...

      January 8, 2013

    • Mark H.

Good idea. I've uploaded the ultimatehead summary rules which are as always excellent. I've got hardcopies in my copy of M&M which I'm bringing. http://files.meetup.c...

      January 8, 2013

  • Mark H.

My list of things I'll bring is at the moment:
    - Mission Red Planet (5 players, 60mins)
    - Chaos in the old world (5 players,[masked] mins prob)
    - Merchants & Marauders (always seems popular)
    - Spartacus (well received last time)
    - Roborally (popular and allows loads of players)
    - Netrunner (just because)

First two are highly rated games so looking forward to trying to get a game.
(CITOW and Spartacus need at minimum 4 to work best.)

I'll also try and bringing something from following 2-player stuff if I have room just in case needed:
    -space hulk
-1960 making of president (a lot like twilight struggle)
-samurai (70's chess like thing with an interesting idea)

    December 21, 2012

    • Mark H.

although I should point out to John that chaos in the old world lets you play ad khorne the god of war and aggression and he is red

      January 7, 2013

    • Paul H.

One of the problems with Merchants & Marauders was that we had nobody who could explain the rules to newbies. I had played it once at the John Gilpin in Ware, but I wasn't confident enough to lead 3 other people into the game.

      January 8, 2013

  • Mark H.

1960 isnt as complicated as it first looks. But yes is kinda involved in that is four or five little subsections working together. I think maybe needs 30 mins of explanation at start and maybe 2 hours for first game. so definately doable at pin Green some time but probably something to agree in advance. if not Lent out will bring so you can at least have a looksy

    January 7, 2013

Getting close to our record of 17 attendees... 8-)

drive them in the wrong direction most likely!

      January 7, 2013

    • Tony A.

I was gonna ask where you were planning on kissing them but I guess the answer is Pin Green Community Centre......

      January 7, 2013

  • Chris

Both expansions for 7 wonders, and Goblins Inc. Goblins Inc is for four, I might bring that... although it sounds like there will be enough new games this month as it is :)

    January 4, 2013

    • Mark H.

Always good for people to bring stuff. Never know if someone bringing games might drop out last minute, or more people turn up than we thought.

      January 4, 2013

  • David J.

I was lucky this Christmas too - can now add 7 Wonders, Torres and Space Crusade Death Angel Card Game to my list

    December 30, 2012

  • Tony A.

Should be coming and Kathie will probably come too. Xmas goodies -a couple of decks for Summoner Wars, Android Netrunner, Spartacus, Of Mice and Mystics and the X Wing Miniatures Game. Yep, I did very well! I have also acquired a couple of shortish card games since I last attended - Coup and Hanabi. Out of that lot I've only found time to play Hanabi, a co-op, so far and it is both very clever and simple. All are available for the meet if anyone is interested but I can't guarantee I'll have learnt the rules to them all by then! I am slightly obssessed with learning/playing the X Wing game at the moment (despite not actually thinking I wanted it.... until I was given it!).

    December 29, 2012

    • Mark H.

oh boy I will definately be up for a game of netrunner. haven't had much chance to use my copy properly yet. summoner wars and x-wing also hot but hoping to fit in chaos in old world so I might have to wait on those.

      December 29, 2012

    • Tony A.

In that case I'll try to get the Netrunner rules down after the New Year - first focus is New Years Eve and Round 3 of the Descent 2nd Ed campaign I've managed to get underway - seeing in the New Year with Cave Spiders, my girlfriend being a thief, my brother trying to kill us all and a nice bottle of port!

      December 30, 2012

  • Daniel P.

Santa was kind and I got Puerto Rico, king of tokyo and the resistance. Puerto Rico kid a bit involved so I won't bring it this time but I will bring the resistance as that has been popular in the past.

    December 28, 2012

    • john

Puerto Rico is a good one - not that hard to learn, but harder to master. Was someone planning a special event for this/next week btw?

      December 28, 2012

  • Daniel P.

May be a bit early but does anyone have games they are planning on bringing? I will likely bring any interesting Christmas presses but also as per john's request will bring race for the galaxy and likely agricola (although subject to change if I decide I'd rather bsg or Star Trek fleet captains)

    December 11, 2012

    • Mark H.

I'll bring "mission red planet" which I'm told is fun in a Libertalia kind of way. I'll also bring roborally as has good flexibility with number of players. And probably 4 or 5 other games.

      December 11, 2012

  • Mark H.

Well spotted and good point. Website set the dates automatically. I propose move put it back one week?

    November 3, 2012

  • john

I know we said first friday of every month... but 4th Jan? Do we want to make an exception here? it's fine by me but I'm guessing a lot of people may not be around? Just a thought...
