Is The Earth Full?

Tonight's meeting will continue the discussion which started in our last Meetup Simplicity and sustainability.

The two contrasting alternative future scenarios "Limits To Growth" and "Abundance" are based on the following views (from Futurist Sohail Inayatullah's paper Six pillars: futures thinking for transforming):

LIMITS TO GROWTH: Steady state– this future seeks to arrest growth and find a balance in the economy and with nature. It is a balanced, softer and fairer society. Community is decisive in this future. Steady state is both back to nature and back to the past. Human values are first here.Technology is often seen as the problem.

ABUNDANCE: Continued growth where current conditions are enhanced: more products, more roads, more technology, and a greater population. Technology is considered the solution to every problem.

In order to better understand these two perspectives, have a look at the following two TED talks:

1. Paul Gilding - The Earth is Full

2. Peter Diamandis - Abundance is our Future

We had a discussion of EROEI for solar panels. There are a bunch of links out there for this, of which this is representative: http://mdsolar.blogspot.se/2008/01/eroie.html .

The book I mentioned is "Collapse" by Jared Diamond (he won the Pulitzer prize for "Guns, Germs and Steel"). It is not explicitly futurist, but rather provides a framework for and details past collapses. Excellent reading, imo.

You are welcome to do both! We are a very openminded group of people, and i think you will find it easy to join in in any discussions if you want to. Otherwise you can just listen and be inspired.

Hi! I will see what I can do! Since we are self-funded we dont have everything sorted yet, but i have a cam that will last at least one hour. May have access to an audio recorder.

Since there's a limit on this event, please let us know if you can't come, so that we can give your place to someone else. In other words, please update your RSVP on Meetup. Thanks!

Hi all! This event is now limited (how appropriate!) due to the large inflow of members and the fact that we can not host unlimited numbers, yet. I hope we can document the event in some way for the ppl that can not attend this time.

Hi all, We have still not decided where to hold this Meetup. The space where we had our last to meetings in Hälsans Hus is booked for that night, so if any of you have suggestions, please let us know. Somewhere for 20 people, preferably free :)

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
