My husband (ex-Catholic) and myself (ex-Lutheran) don't really know or care if there is a God; a chemist and engineer open to all ideas as long as they can be proved. We can no longer ignore the negative effects of Christianity in USA politics.
My husband and I are trying to find the positive benefits that a "church" has (community, socialization, friendships) without the negative aspects of having to pretend to believe that basing our lives on an ambiguous book written by 2000+ year old dead men actually makes sense. We also want to make sure our that our children, who are being brought up without a strong religious guidance, don't latch onto the first religious group that he/she sees because he/she finds something attractive about it that was missing in his/her life. When we hear studies that show that atheists are less happy than religious, it is our belief that this is because of the isolation and fear that many atheists have of expressing who they are. As a couple, we belong to no other groups and are attracted to the ideas of this group.
Thanks for coming Kara! I hope you guys had a good time. Re your geek comment, I like Miyazaki movies too. My friend George who was at the party used to make me watch anime back in the 90's.
Welcome Karen! Thanks for joining.
Congratulations to Kara and David and welcome to Rebecca the newest and youngest member!
