StoryCode Immersions - Business Models for Transmedia

June's StoryCode Immersion is focused on Business Models for Transmedia. It will be broken into two parts:

Part 1 will be presented by Mike Knowlton and Aina Abiodun and will focus on Business Structures. We will talk about the different ways you can set-up your cross-platform venture initially.

Part 2 will be led by Lina Srivastava. Lina will explore the different types of business models that exist for transmedia storytelling. She will walk us through basic types of models that are usable and useful in the context of interactive content, looking at the factors that you should consider in creating a well-managed project, storyworld, or campaign.

Lina Srivastava is a social innovation strategist, combining activism, technology, culture, and storytelling. An attorney by training from New York University School of Law, Lina is the creator of the Transmedia Activism framework, and has been involved in campaigns for several documentaries, including Oscar-winning Born into Brothels and The Devil Came on Horseback. The former Executive Director of Kids with Cameras, and the Association of Video and Filmmakers, she is the strategist for VODO, 3Generations, Lakou Mizik, and Who Is Dayani Cristal?. Lina has provided strategic project design to a group of social impact organizations, including UNESCO, the World Bank, UNICEF, MobileActive, Shine Global and BYkids.

Please feel free to contribute your own experiences on these topics during the workshop.

**PLEASE NOTE** - we had approximately half of the people who RSVP'ed for the last Immersion drop-off within 24-hours before the event. Please don't do this again. We try to keep this programming free, but when this happens it doesn't give people on the waiting list enough time to plan. We ask that you only RSVP if you are committed to attending, and if you do need to change your RSVP please do it at least 3 days before the event.

StoryCode’s Immersions are a “get your hands dirty” series of working sessions meant to educate and share knowledge about the various complexities involved in creating successful immersive media projects. These sessions are highly interactive and intimate. Bring your computer and be ready to roll up your sleeves.

This will be hosted in the "flex space" near Lincoln Center Elinor Bunin Hall. The Flex Space is off to the left if you are looking at the Elinor Bunin theater entrance.

    Overall, a very worthwhile and valuable event.

    I would have liked the first talk to address transmedia more specifically. It was more of an Entrepreneur 101 intro class without much discussion about the particular needs and challenges that transmedia has. I know for me, one big interest I have is legal liability and insurance for transmedia experiences, especially live parts. It seems there is a much larger risk involved with potential lawsuits and lots of murky grey area. For instance, what happens if a player misinterprets a clue and ends up entering a wrong, illegal space or gets hurt?

    I would love to have heard more about how to pitch transmedia experiences to clients who have never worked in that space before. It seems to be particularly difficult to explain succinctly without scaring them. Also, some case studies with basic budgets and profit/loss (if possible) would be useful to give a sense of what different experiences or campaigns may cost.

    Understood - we've definitely considered charging but our location complicates things as it would then need to be ticketed via their box office. For right now we have to stick with the current system. We only Livestream our Forums, the Immersion room is small and not conducive to a Livestream. Plus these are meant to be highly interactive workshops and that just wouldn't work via video stream.

    Ruchika - probably not. These are meant to be in person, workshops. As of right now we aren't livestreaming them or recording/posting them. We may change this in the future, but for now the Immersions are in person events.

    could REALLY use the support and/or a long-term gig....

    & brand strategy intiaitives, creative and plans) 2) Obtention (a Sci
    fi/mystery series; concept, building and plan for a transmedia
