If climate change is one of the biggest tests of our capacity to exercise foresight, then what is or should be the role of foresight practitioners in developing and exercising such foresight?
Are climate modellers and scientists the twenty-first century oracles or are they 'over-reaching' and going beyond the role of science?
If they are the new oracles then where does that leave futurists - out of a job?
To start a conversation on this topic, this evening we'll discuss climate research and climate action trends. Stephen McGrail - whose latest paper in the Journal of Futures Studies provides an initial foray into considering such questions - will host what should be a provocative conversation about some important questions.
His paper "Climate Change and Futures Epistemologies" is uploaded here as material you might like to read ahead of the session (kind of pre-reading).
I just saw a related blog post by Professor Roger Pielke Jr (a Professor of Environmental Studies, Colorado University) titled "Climate Predictions as Double-Edged Sword". It's worth a read as a follow-on from our discussion

Thanks everyone for such a broad-ranging, yet deep discussion the other night & links/docs. I'm still finding myself pondering so many aspects of what we talked about... which is a good thing!

Ideas for themes? Perhaps we could discuss the problem of climate change, and how futures studies/foresight is (and could) contribute to better responses to this problem? My paper in the March 2013 issue could be the "provocation" to get the discussion going. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this...
Last night's session also re-sparked my interest in how futures methods and studies is being being rethought and reinvented for the twenty-first century. Perhaps we could have dialogue around these trends and the group's own ideas?
