From Duvall Street in Key West to Clematis Streets in West Palm Beach, and everywhere in between, South Florida’s streets offer a wealth of opportunities for Street and Urban Photographers to practice our craft.

Street photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings.

Street photography uses the techniques of straight photography in that it shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society. Street photography often tends to be ironic and can be distanced from its subject matter, and often concentrates on a single human moment, caught at a decisive or poignant moment. On the other hand, much street photography takes the opposite approach and provides a very literal and extremely personal rendering of the subject matter, giving the audience a more visceral experience of walks of life they might only be passingly familiar with. In the 20th century, street photographers have provided an exemplary and detailed record of street culture in Europe and North America, and elsewhere to a somewhat lesser extent.

Many classic works of street photography were created in the period between roughly 1890 and 1975 and coincided with the introduction of portable cameras, especially small 35mm, rangefinder cameras, most famously the Leica, as used by Henri Cartier-Bresson, among others.

The purpose of the group is to promote and practice the art of Street Photography in South Florida, as well as to learn from each other and help everyone improve. Since the actual taking of photos on the street is often best done by oneself, suggestions and assignments will be posted as meetups. We will also get together at least monthly to look at and discuss the various photos that were taken, and to share our experiences of the various photographic opportunities that we went to shoot at. Additionally, meetups at events such as festivals, street fairs, charity events, or other large gatherings, where a group of photographers will not attract attention, will be scheduled as they become available.

We also plan to have professional photographers and other guest speakers at future meetings to share their knowledge about street photography, as well as the psychology of taking pictures of strangers, and techniques for getting the most out of your camera while shooting street photography.

Street photography can be fun, challenging, and even a bit scary. The hope is that by joining this group, we can collectively have fun, challenge our creativity, and overcome any fears we may have to push our photography to new limits. Come join us and let's hit the streets!

"I've been a photographer for as long as I have memory both with and without a camera. Without a camera I began storing images and scenes I came upon which appealed to me in some way, something I continue to do to this day."

"No need to be shy or embarrassed. I shot with a 5mp kodak point and shoot to a leica M6. For street type shots, does it really matter much? Or you may have some lens questions. Just ask here"
