Entertainment Law for Filmmakers

I am willing to speak on the basics of law as it relates to filmmakers discussing:
contracts, and
business entities.

I can host it at my building in the cine rent studio.

What's everyone's interest level?

I hope everyone had a good time and was able to take away valuable information.

Let me know if you have any legal needs in entertainment law or injury, family, business, and estate planning.

Outstanding presentation. Limited liability, contracts on napkins, non-disclosure agreements, partnerships, etc. I took notes. Lots and lots of notes. Thank-you, Chase, for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to educate us on how to be prepared for potential problems. You're in my electronic rolodex.

Very useful information, well presented, with a great discussion following! We all know that various legalities and personal risk exposure impacts every facet of our lives nowadays, including any "film making" activities we might pursue. Whether the risks are encountered as a result of ones' hobby, business enterprise, or something in-between, learning about the steps we might take to protect ourselves is invaluable. This meeting was a welcome chance to learn from someone who really knows about and understands many of the tools we can use to reduce our risk exposure, and minimize any potential negative consequences! It was a wise step in our self education process! Many THANKS to Chase for his willing contribution to the cause!

I finally got this scheduled with cine rent. Unless a real shoot needs the studio, we are set.

I look forward to seeing everyone. Feel free to bring friends and invite others.

I asked the attorney one simple question before review, would I have less rights to sue for defamation if I signed a release as is with no editing rights...the answer was "yes"

I also asked that an attorney review their release and they were for it initially until the attorney started to protect my rights

    March 31, 2014

  • Miriam S.

The release gives them sole rights to what you give them, how they produce the film and you have no editing or other rights; you basically sign them over in full and since they didn't have key information in advance that they failed to obtain during investigation which was key to the story, I refused to sign the release

In relation to videos/films posted on sites like youtube, I was wondering how "fair use" and other copyright laws affect a filmmaker's use of a song in their films.

Would love to learn about location, talent, and materials releases for documentaries. The easy answer is, "Get any and all releases," but since I'm retroactively getting some of these, I don't want to go overboard where it's unnecessary. I think a lot of indy filmmakers run into this problem and could benefit from some straight talk.

Thanks, now that I know there is some interest I will try to offer this to a few more groups and we can use it as a networking event as well.

I am working with Cine Rent to try to find a good time. I'm assuming weekends are better for people.

I'd love to attend. My schedule is a bit wacky, so it will depend on the time and date, but I'll definitely try to make it.

This is a great topic. It doesn't look like the date has been set yet. The date matters for me. :-)
