We're hosting a Vegan Bake Sale at Countryside Unitarian Church! I'm extremely proud of how successful our bake sales have been so far and how much we've been able to donate to Mercy for Animals, HEART, Save-A-Pet, and Creatively Caring. This time, we are baking for the great organization Have A Heart Farm, founded by one of our very own group members, Debby Rubenstein. They are currently working to establish an animal sanctuary in lower Wisconsin which would include a sanctuary for farm animals as well as for other abandoned animals, be a place where people and rescue animals in transit could stop to rest, and be a place of humane education. They are raising funds to buy the property and I would love for our bake sale to be a success and help them reach their goal.
If you would like to donate a baked good, you can drop it off by 10:00am at Countryside, or arrange a drop-off at my house in Mundelein. Can't bake but want to enjoy the sweets? Come join us and purchase some yummy baked goods. (And don't forget to bring a container so you can take lots home with you!) I'll also have available for purchase Hannah Kaminsky's cookbook, "My Sweet Vegan." You may recognize Hannah from her popular blog, BitterSweet, or her articles in VegNews magazine. I'm pricing them at only $15.00, cheaper than Amazon!
Countryside Animal Friends, co-founded by another meetup group member, Belinda Draper, is sponsoring the bake sale. Please check it out and get involved! You don't have to be a member of Countryside in order to participate in the group. They are donating their share of the proceeds to Young at Heart Pet Rescue located in Palatine.
If you're not familiar with vegan baking, check your local library or bookstore to see what cookbooks they offer. Vegan baking does not include dairy (butter, milk, cream cheese, etc.), eggs, or honey. There are wonderful products out there such as Earth Balance, agave nectar, flaxseed, applesauce, and Ener-G Egg Replacer you can use instead. Here's some helpful info from Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale.
When you rsvp, please state whether you are baking, attending, etc. We'll also need a few volunteers to help man the tables. If you're baking something, you can put it on a platter with your name on the bottom and we'll get it back to you. We'll also bring a few platters you can use. Don't worry about pricing, we'll take care of that.
Hope to see you there!
