Rattlesnake Canyon (Exploratory Unfinished Business)

A group of us recently went up to Rattlesnake Canyon. It was the first time I had ever been there. It was fabulous! Just one little issue...We didn't get to spend enough time up there! I'm not going to let that happen this time.

Time: 4-4.5 hours of hiking time (Start from Willow Springs Picnic Area by 8:30 and be back there by 1)

Difficulty: Moderate-- There's lots of scrambling right from the get go. And this is exploratory after a certain point. So the terrain might get tougher. If it's too difficult, we'll turn around.

Elevation Gain:[masked]ft depending on how far we go (Google Earth)

Distance: 3+ miles round trip best estimate as I plan on hiking past the second set of terraces. I'm not really sure how far we can go back there. And I'm also not in a big hurry to get anywhere. This is a beautiful place. And I'm not going to race through it. I plan on hiking for a total of about 4-4.5 hrs round trip. We'll turn around when time dictates that we do so.

****If we do run into obstacles which block our progress, we'll just start back earlier. This scenario is a possibility

Trailhead: Willow Springs Picnic Area

Pace: Relaxed (Time for pictures and socializing) If you're in a big hurry, you've come to the wrong place.

Danger: Low (Limited Exposure)

Sue Bright wrote the following about this hike:

This is a pristine, lightly traveled canyon that looks like nothing special from lower elevations. Once you get into this canyon you will be amazed at the beauty it holds.

There is one spot with a tiny bit of exposure that scared the beejeebies out of me the first time I was there. However, when I went back a second time it seemed like nothing.

I don't anticipate any problems with this. And I will be glad to assist anybody who wants a little help.

Very fun scramble and extra exploration....one doesn't always have to remain on a given course to have a great time. Thank you Mike, and everyone, for making this a really good day in the mountains!

Thanks everybody! I really appreciate it. We had a great group. Thanks to all for patience as we tried to find a reasonable way to take it a little further. Too bad we couldn't this time. But it's still a great place. Seeing those sheep was a fabulous end to the hike. Good eyes Diane!

Mike, This is a wrong day for me. I hike 3 days a week; Sunday or Monday, and Wednesday and Friday. One day's rest between hikes is important for me. Your last Rattlesnake Canyon hike was Monday. I have already committed to hike Eagle Peak on Wednesday; Windy Peak on Friday. My physical condition will not allow to hike Rattlesnake Canyon on Thursday even though my mind wants to do it. Hiking 3 days back to back is beyond my ability. Please do Rattlesnake Canyon again, won't you?

Too bad Masayo. I know you wanted to spend more time up there. I am sure that this hike will get posted again in the near future. I'm just not sure by whom.

I sure hate to click on NO button on this invitation; so I won't.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
