I have never been here, but I have seen the pictures and heard that this place is a photographer's paradise!
We will set up camp and then begin our exploration on a flat loop trail on top of white volcanic ash hundreds of feet thick and dart in and out of amazing cathedral looking spires of bentonite clay.
The park sets at a comfortable elevation of 4800' though it can get quite hot as there is absolutely NO SHADE anywhere except for the picnic and camping grounds.
This park is located 2.5 hours northeast of Las Vegas and is a 93 mile drive up scenic hwy 18 to Beryl Junction where we will turn left onto hwy 56, pass by Modena as we cross the Union Pacific tracks and over the summit where you can sometimes see elk, wild horses, and charcoal kilns built for Nevada's Silver mining days. Once in Panaca, Nevada, we will turn onto hwy 93 for a short mile or so to Cathedral Gorge State Park.
I have reserved Group Use Area #2. Camping fee is only $15 for Nevada residents and $17 for out of state residents per vehicle, this will be collected on arrival to the park. The facilities include: drinking water, large family sized grills/fire rings, and a covered pavilion area. We will need to bring our own firewood.
If interested we can make arrangements for a guided Ranger Hike.
There is no need for offroad vehicles, here. It is all paved.
This place rocks!! I would not want to miss this one since it is soooo different looking from anything we have experienced down here in Las Vegas.
You will see imaginary shapes, slots, deep holes in the frozen ash, and
an occasional gopher...
I am really stoked to share this one with you all. I can't wait to see the amazing
pictures you all will take in this wonderland as each of us is drawn
artistically to different things. Lots of photo ops and lots of scrambling on the spires is available. Note: I would recommend gloves if you do a lot of scrambling. If you scramble, it is quite crumbly on the bentonite
spires. Some of the eroded spires have gravel slopes that are like walking on marbles. So, be careful scrambling. The spires are rough to the touch, but not foreboding.
The dark, deep slots are magical!!! No other way to explain it. That is why this
little park, a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere has been thrilling visitors
Here is a link to the brochure for the park.
I am not sure if this will be our camp area, but it will give you an idea of what the camp areas look like.
