Car Camping Cathedral Gorge State Park

I have never been here, but I have seen the pictures and heard that this place is a photographer's paradise!

We will set up camp and then begin our exploration on a flat loop trail on top of white volcanic ash hundreds of feet thick and dart in and out of amazing cathedral looking spires of bentonite clay.

The park sets at a comfortable elevation of 4800' though it can get quite hot as there is absolutely NO SHADE anywhere except for the picnic and camping grounds.

This park is located 2.5 hours northeast of Las Vegas and is a 93 mile drive up scenic hwy 18 to Beryl Junction where we will turn left onto hwy 56, pass by Modena as we cross the Union Pacific tracks and over the summit where you can sometimes see elk, wild horses, and charcoal kilns built for Nevada's Silver mining days. Once in Panaca, Nevada, we will turn onto hwy 93 for a short mile or so to Cathedral Gorge State Park.

I have reserved Group Use Area #2. Camping fee is only $15  for Nevada residents and $17 for out of state residents per vehicle, this will be collected on arrival to the park. The facilities include: drinking water, large family sized grills/fire rings, and a covered pavilion area. We will need to bring our own firewood.

If interested we can make arrangements for a guided Ranger Hike.

There is no need for offroad vehicles, here. It is all paved.

This place rocks!! I would not want to miss this one since it is soooo different looking from anything we have experienced down here in Las Vegas.
You will see imaginary shapes, slots, deep holes in the frozen ash, and
an occasional gopher...

I am really stoked to share this one with you all. I can't wait to see the amazing
pictures you all will take in this wonderland as each of us is drawn
artistically to different things. Lots of  photo ops and lots of scrambling on the spires is available. Note: I would recommend gloves if you do a lot of scrambling. If you scramble, it is quite crumbly on the bentonite
spires. Some of the eroded spires have gravel slopes that are like walking on marbles. So, be careful scrambling. The spires are rough to the touch, but not foreboding.

The dark, deep slots are magical!!! No other way to explain it. That is why this
little park, a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere has been thrilling visitors
for years.

Here is a link to the brochure for the park.

http://parks.nv.gov/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/CathedralGorge2010-screen.pdf

I am not sure if this will be our camp area, but it will give you an idea of what the camp areas look like.

As always...

Thank you all for joining me! Such great times! One of the best State Park campgrounds I have been to! I will post it again when we can utilize allof the activities that they provide. Volleyball, tether ball and horseshoe pit! We can make it more of a "game camp" Since we didn't get to play as many games as we wanted to :)

Jodi, I plan on going up Friday morning sometime, so please don't wait for me at the skillet.
I'm bringing my stove if anyone needs to borrow it, that's fine. Not bringing the grill since there are family grills there.
Will bring a Frisbee, a game called Po-Keno, maybe some others....
Bought a bundle of firewood at Winco for $3.68. Figure it will probably be 2 or 3 times as much up there.
Not sure yet about potluck, but did decide on my "show and tell" Also planning on bringing a bottle of wine.

Questions: Is someone bringing charcoal for the grills? Or should I pick up a bag?
The $15.00 car fee is for each vehicle for each night we are there?

And finally, Jodi (and all organizers) Thank You for setting this up!!!
My cell is[masked] if anyone needs it.

      June 19, 2014

I'm driving and taking Karen. We could probably fit 1 person but not sure about gear since car is small. We will be leaving with the group Saturday and not doing ranger hike. I will bring cut up fruit and Karen dessert

    1 · June 19, 2014

  • Jodi *Starry* K.

As we hit the almost week mark..... a few things to be thinking about:

#1. I will call into the Park Office and clarify tomorrow about any charges for the guided ranger hike. #2. They DO NOT accept credit cards at the office, please be prepared to bring cash to pay the additional car fee of $15.00

#3. I believe that they have firewood for sale at the park, but I will check, again they only accept cash.

#4. I have only seen Gail post about a carpool arrangement, I am bringing Kim F and we have Glamping Gear. I do have a truck, so I may have room in the back for some extra gear. So I am assuming that everyone is either driving themselves or already made arrangements ahead of time. Gail if you don't want to go up Friday with Kassy, and Amanda doesn't go or goes up Friday, I would have room for you or one other person, as long they don't have Glamping Gear as well.. ;)

      June 13, 2014

  • Jodi *Starry* K.

I don't really have a formal plan of set hikes and set times for this trip. It's going to be somewhat of a do your own thing. My plan is to relax during the day once we get there and get camps set up. And by relax, I mean I am going to bring some games to play, Yatzee, cards, a board game called "Battle of the Sexes" (if we have enough guys and girls that want to play) so if you have a favorite board came, bring it. There is a large shaded ramada to hang out under. Then once the evening rolls in, that is when I want to do some exploring... right after dinner, for a sunset hike and explore...if you want to participate in that then bring a head lamp. And don't forget to bring some firewood for campfire stories :) :) :)

    1 · June 9, 2014

    • Gail

Doubtless you'll be able to ride to sights w/us & anyone else exploring. Since we've already seen Caliente & some of Kershaw, we're interested primarily in Pioche now. :-)

      June 13, 2014

    • Jodi *Starry* K.

I was thinking about hitting up Pioche before arriving at the campground. I am still waiting to hear back on check in time

      1 · June 13, 2014

  • Jodi *Starry* K.

Some other options for Saturday during the day, is exploring Pioche and Kershaw-Ryan... Once I set up I can't leave, unless I catch a ride... as my truck is attached to my tent..

    June 9, 2014

    • Jodie

We did the entire Cathedral Gorge (just two of us) in under three hours. We stayed in a hotel. The next day we did a hike in Kershaw to the park high point. There are a few hikes here to do and they have hiking trail maps. We also got a Lincoln County Petroglyph locator pamphlet. Your camping grounds will be great.

      June 9, 2014

I have spent the last month, comparing the weather forcasts and tempatures. This place seems to run just about 20 degrees cooler than here in Vegas.. here is a weather forecast link for all to keep an eye on.

I just talked to a couple of people who were up there this weekend, when it was well over 100 degrees in the Las Vegas Valley, they said it was about 20 degrees cooler, as I anticipated. They also said that there were lots of trees to set up tents by.
