Reach Out America is sponsoring a Dec. 9 forum entitled, “Guns Kill People,” on what we can do together to keep our community and the community at large, safe.
“As we approach the first anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook, we must look back on a year in which no federal gun control legislation was passed, a period when almost 10,000 Americans lost their lives in incidents of gun violence,” said Reach Out America Chairperson Sandra Salat.
A panel of expert advocates on the issue will include, Alexis Confer of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Andy Pelosi of Gun Free Kids, a member of the Nassau County Police, Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and Rabbi Shaul Praver of Newtown, Conn., where the tragedy occurred one year ago. A dialogue with the audience will follow.
The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Saddle Rock Elementary School, 10 Hawthorne Lane in Great Neck.
Although New York has led on this issue and has passed sensible laws, local statutes are not enough to keep us safe. “It is our hope that this discussion will lead to action here in Great Neck and spread to neighboring communities,” said Lois Schaffer, co-chair of the program. “Surely we can do better. Let’s take action together.”
