Our Fall Florida Trail Association Chapter Meeting will be around 1:pm Saturday 9/21/2013 at Silver Lake Rec Area Pavillion in Withlacoochee State Forest.
Saturday lunch will feature grilled hot dogs along with leftovers from Friday night campout and assorted pot luck. A $2.00 donation to cover lunch expenses will be collected.
We ask that you bring your own table setting (plate / utensils) if you can.
In addition to our FTA Meeting, the weekend will be comprised of: Camping / hiking / paddling/biking, family fun, and food!
For those camping, we will be at the Cypress Glen Campground within the Silver Lake Recreation Area. You can camp Friday, Saturday or both nights. Fee is $20.00 per night / $10 for over age 65.
Friday night potluck at Cypress Glen Campground- or dinner on your own. See comments...
Those coming just for the day Saturday, $2.00 per person fee at self service honor system kiosk at the pavillion. Registered campers don't pay this day fee.
Camping is first come first serve at the self pay kiosk. In the past we have tried to congregate near the canoe/kayak launch which is also near the shower/ restroom.... sharing a site is encouraged... two tents per site allowed...maximum of 5 persons per site
We will plan on two hikes for Saturday morning... one will be the traditional shorter trek of about 4 miles, and one the traditional 8 mile linear River Trail hike from Ridge Manor Trailhead back to the pavillion in time for lunch... We will need a few shuttle drivers to drive us down to Ridge Manor Trailhead.
Those going on the 8 mile hike meet at Silver Lake Pavillion 8:30 am on Saturday. Please bring 2 litres water and be sure of your ability to complete 8 miles. There may be patches of wet trail, and other sections may be loose sand.
Those going on the 4 mile hike meet at 9:30 at the pavillion.. Tom Hogan and Mitch Almon will lead this hike. Due to high water conditions, there will be some off trail hiking. This will include waist high grass, areas recently disturbed by hogs, exposed roots, thorny vines, and climbing over a few down trees. If the route under I-75 is not clear, we will move by car to a different start point. Be prepared.
Those who don't want to hike can paddle Silver Lake or bike ride on the Withlacoochee State Trail till lunch.
Silver Lake Recreation Area to include Cypress Glen Campground has a stated "No Alcohol Allowed" policy.
For those camping Saturday... Sue Bunge is coordinating a group breakfast for Sunday morning. Email her directly through Meetup if you want to participate.
