Purgatory on Earth (POE) Summer Series #2, 7 mile hike

Reviewing your behavior of the past year, you keep asking yourself why you were so thoughtless, so uncaring, and, shall we mildly say, a little bit unkind.  You know that eventually that behavior will catch up to you and there will be h... to pay.  The day is now scheduled. The second of the summer series. Time to up your courage.  You know it will be difficult.  You know you will be suffering. You know it is everything you dread. Alas, you know it must be done. For your misdeeds of the past year cannot be dismissed.  To reduce a prolonged stay in Purgatory, you can work time off by hiking in the Florida summer. It will be ugly.  There will be mosquitoes. Deer flies. Oppressive heat. Shirt soaking humidity. And this is all for your benefit.  Pay now or pay later.  Who's in?

What: approx 7 mile hike

When: Wednesday, August 21, 2013

Meeting time and place: 8:00 a.m. 200 yds east of Stage Coach Cemetery on CR 480 (AKA Stage Coach Rd)

Where: Withlacoochee State Forest (WSF), Citrus Tract, south of Inverness, FL

Route: The lower half of the D-loop (southern loop)

What to bring: two quarts water, insect repellent, sunscreen, snack, and sandwich for when we take a break.  See note #1 below.

Note: #1: Even sinners such as yourself will need a reprieve after the hike, so please join us for cool watermelon, bite size pieces.

Note: #2: This is my favorite part of the forest, it has a different personality than the rest of the trails. See if you agree.

Congratulations one & all for enduring another hellful hike. After fighting your way through the many obstacles how far did you actually hike? 3 cheers for the females ... we are definitely the stronger species. Gordy it sounds like you again were the fearless leader we've come to respect. Marty & I are just sorry we couldn't be there but in fact are enduring our own high heat & humidity that it seems you were hell bent on sending up our way for the next few days. What no libations of the fermented grape variety??? We'll have to correct that when we come down in the Fall. Great to see that hikers are still getting out & enjoying the flora & fauna of florida (lots of alliteration). Keep on trekking.
    Regards to all,
    Arlene Winick

Of course I got up to a family emergency this morning. Can't make it this time. Hopefully the next one. I really want to do one of these hikes. Thanks anyway.

Cheryl, We will probably be walking 20 - 22 minutes per mile. The first 3 miles are easy going, the next one is downhill, and the last three have some ups and downs, nothing overly strenuous. You will have extra weight in that you should be carrying 2 quarts of water.

Gordy, sounds good, I can do that. Is anybody carpooling from Tampa? I am near USF off I-75 if anyone has a spot left. Just message me. I am up late and then get up every morning at 4:30 so I will get the message.

I am gonna have to cancel. I just got back from the doctor & found out I cracked my ankle. I swear, I have the WORST damn luck. The doctor wouldn't even put me in one of those boot things cause he knew if probably still go, so he put me in a damn cast I can't even walk on. I am soooo sorry, I was really looking forward to it. I already had my pack packed. I really hope to make it out to the next one. I'll be praying ya'll do well, start safe & work of enough sins. Lol Happy Trails

I am so tempted to try this. I am a little slow and don't want to hold people up. I've done 7 miles before. Is this one really hard or just hot?

I may camp at Tillis either the night before (i.e. tonight) or the night after... or both.

The hike leader makes the decision, but I heard some forests do not allow it. I would prefer no dogs on this hike, but I want to talk to you at the hike because might want to put on a hike in October for owners and dogs, so please see.

I completely understand about this one. It may be a lil to long & hot for her right now anyway.

I can't WAIT !!! Do any of your hikes allow dogs along? Especially dogs that are VERY well mannered, VERY friendly & listen better then ANY kid I've ever known, our even adults for that matter?

Perhaps an old Catholic in that title choice, no matter, IF purgartory has become part of our best lexicon then a wonderful, challenging, happy choice.

I mean, walk this trek and your sins are forgiven. Seems like a generous trade, for sure. (Or is there fine print in this deal, probation terms unknown or unstated. Just how many Purgatory walks do we have to take to wind up with a sum positive total?) Rutie and I will get there with ya all, just be patient. Oh, the gal with the t-shirt, that's my duaghter behaving, well, just as she should but as she likely would. OK, not my daughter, I just like the gal and her party shattering/shake it up conversation starter. Having a bit of fun.

    Anybody do exorcisms?
