Weekend Backpacking Citrus

October 26 - 27, Weekend Backpacking, Citrus Tract, Withlacoochee State Forest, Holder Mine Trailhead.  Come out for the first overnight of the Fall season.  We'll hike the Citrus trail approximately 7 miles to the primitive camp for the night.  This should be a good hike for any beginners to shakedown their gear before going on the Green Swamp backpack.  Meet at the Holder Mine Trailhead parking area at 11:00.  The Citrus forest is typically dry, so I will drop a couple gallons of water at the forest road crossing near camp before the hike.  Have around 2 to 3 quarts with you for the hike and setting up camp.  If you are new to these weekend backpacking trips, feel free to PM me with any gear questions or for some low-cost, lightweight ideas to help make your hike more enjoyable.

Thanks for a great weekend Darren and everyone else. I am working on the pictures. Will try to post soon if I figure it out. I don't see an obvious place to post pictures.....I only see the tab where you can view pictures.

A great trip! So much fun around camp and so many nice people. Many thanks to Darren for keeping us hydrated and finding that box the Boy Scouts left behind. I also want to thank Sue for the magic yellow bag and Kate and Brian for my new kale recipe. Secret club code word for the weekend is #151. Hope to see you all soon. OUT

Darren...yes, thanks for hosting this event. The weather couldn't have been any better. Great to meet some first timers, Brian and Kate, Jerillyn, the Dabes with their four legged kids, and Michael. Thanks to Tracy, we now have a new game to play around the campfire.

I really wanted to make this and am sorry to cancel at the last minute. Hopefully Tom is wary of my RSVPs and no one was waiting for me. I remember meeting Tom, Kevin and possibly others of you on previous trips. Please text or email me a contact number or two so I can reach you in the future, I lost Tom's number with my last phone. I'm grateful to have moved from second shift to first, so that makes going away on weekends easier. Unfortunately this was my first week on days, my body is still adjusting, and I overslept this am! I know you'll have fun without me! Take care, Mike March (305)[masked]

Is the turn to Holder Mine well marked?

    October 23, 2013

    • Darren M.

When you are NB on 581, there will be two convenience stores on your right. You will be out in the country up to this point. Then there is a brown WSF sign on your left just after the stores. Make the left and stay straight to the trailhead. At first you will be in a neighborhood. Then it becomes a dirt road. Proceed on the dirt road for a little over a mile to the campground and trailhead on the left just after that.

    Darren,

Java Joe here. Would like to attend this overnighter as Citrus Tract is my stomping grounds. I've repainted blazes here after burns for the last couple of years. Would bring along my wife, Kava Kathy, and our two pack animals (friendly Goldens). Can keep Goldens (and Kathy, if need be) on leashes.

I know Kevin and Tom will get the best tent sites, heck Amanda may secretly hike out and set up Toms tent for him. I Always wanted to do this trip. So I am really glad Darren has scheduled it and i am able to go. See you all soon.

If you want, I'm sure we could share ?

      October 14, 2013

I think we could all fit under Kevin's tent/tarp wilderness survival Boy Scout contraption. Will you guys have someone preparing your meals as well? I may have to go no cook as I will never be able to keep up.

I was wondering if we would be doing this hike again. Looking forward to it.
