FNST Western Corridor Hiking Series - Hike 8b

Western Corridor Hiking Series  Hike 8  Mutual Mine to and around Radar Hill. This hike brings us into one of the many areas along the Western Corridor of the Florida National Scenic Trail maintained by the Suncoast Chapter.  The Citrus Tract of the Withlachoochee State Forest features hills, sinks, limestone caves, hammocks and pine forests. This area is home to a dense population of red-cockaded woodpeckers. The Citrus Tract has the largest population of red-cockaded woodpeckers in peninsular Florida. There are forty-eight clusters of woodpeckers in the forest. The forest is upland sandhill scrub, oak thickets, sand pine and longleaf pine. See info and nesting map here

We will all hike together from Mutual Mine to Stage Coach Road.  The short hike will end there.  The long hike will continue from there around Stage Pond along the "D" Loop to Brittle Road.

The ending point for both hikes will be at Florida Trail, 200 yards EAST of Stage Coach Cemetery, Hwy 480 Inverness, FL.

Sun. Jan. 12 - Mike

Short hike: 6.2 miles, Mutual Mine south to Stage Coach Road.

Long hike: 10 miles to Brittle Road south cross of the Citrus Tract "D" Loop.

Carpooling:  If you would like to carpool, please post as a comment

We'll meet at Florida Trail, 200 yards EAST of Stage Coach Cemetery, Hwy 480 Inverness, FL then shuttle to starting point at the Mutual Mine TH. You'll need to know whether you'll be hiking 10 miles or 6.2 miles when you arrive so we can do a proper shuttle.  Be prompt.

What to Bring:--> 2 liters or quarts of water. Lunch and snacks. The water is not a guideline.  It is a requirement for this hike.  Snacks and Lunch.  Sunscreen is optional.

Good hike with a nice, mellow group. We didn't see any wood peckers, but several of the newer hikers were excited to see a large golden orb spider. Our sweep, Iris did an excellent job

Good, mellow group. Logistics were a bit different, as the initial meeting place was the end of both the short and long hikes! Didn't see any wood peckers, but several of the newer hikers were thrilled by a large golden orb spider!

Good pace, Shuttling ... so much fun & confusion but handled brilliantly by our leader, Mike Nelson. No roots, no hog "rutting" great for hiking. Thanks from the both of us.

I'll be hiking down Saturday and camping in the woods (couldnt get a permit for mutual mine) so I need to know where to be for the start of Sundays hike. and I would love a ride back to Inverness after we finish.

The easiest thing to see is the cemetery. Then you know you are only 200 yards away, approx 2 minute walk. There are signs where the trail crosses Stage Coach/ hwy 480.

For the meeting place "at Florida Trail, 200 yards EAST of Stage Coach Cemetery", is there a trail head easy to spot from the road?
    What do we look for?
    Thanks

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
