Third Last Annual 26.7 Mile Hike

What: 26.7 mile one day hike

Where: Citrus Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest.

When: 6:00 am start.  Meeting at 5:45 am

There is 11 hours of daylight.  Sunrise 7:15 am, Sunset 6:13 pm

We have openings for 8 additional hikers. The hike will start and end at the Tillis Hill Campground. If you want to camp Friday and/or Saturday you can call[masked]-4238.  Sites are $20 unless 65 years old.  I am in site 28.  Informed them others might want to camp and so there are sites also available nearby at 26,27,29,30,31

I will be putting water out about every 6 miles so you only have to carry enough water to last you  6 miles.  If you want to put other supplies in my car to get at mile 18, maybe extra food, snack, jacket, let me know.  You will need to bring food to sustain you for the long day.

We stay fairly close together.  This is a group event, NOT an individual event. We wait at every road crossing to be sure everyone is okay.  If this does not fit your style, please do not sign up.

There will be a bailout at 18 miles and Alex Garcia is planning on hiking that distance and then driving back to the campground; he will take anyone else that will be stopping there.

One must voluntarily bail out there if you do not arrive at 18 miles in 7 hours.  We will stay pretty close together and so do not want to keep others from hitting their pace if one is too slow.

Safety first.

Any questions, let me know

Kudos to all and double kudos to those who finished the 26.9 miles. Cady and I will remember this hike and laugh about it for quite sometime. We really had a great time and enjoyed spending time in the woods with all of you. Thanks. Susan

I had to laugh. At mile 18 Darren handed me bottle of Gatorade. I reached for it and he put it in my hand, but it fell to the ground - my hand was not functioning too well in the cold and I could not squeeze the bottle

My hands weren't working at all. It was hilarious.

Gordy...THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for once again putting us through fun time agony...Well we won't forget this hike any time soon. And thanks to Nancy and Gordy, you have given me my trail name..Mary Poppins. You both called me that on separate occasions on the hike--I like it ...was great seeing everyone and I am glad we all survived. Waiting for the Fourth Last annual 26.9 hike but not until next year..and I agree with Arlene--5 stars Gordy 0 stars for weather..except it was nice it quit raining for the campfire Saturday night and the award ceremony. Wasn't Sunday a beautiful day...

Thank you, Gordy for everything! I believe we'll be talking about this hike for a long time to come. I'm so glad I was part of this at times excruciating hike. It did test me quite a bit. Thank you to Gordy for planning, coordinating, and leading the hike and providing refreshment caches, and Thom for providing and stashing our liquid incentive at a strategic spot. Thanks to all who took and posted pictures as a reminder for all we suffered through together! It was a great group of people.

Follow up for Steve: "If you feel bad at 10 miles, you're in trouble. If you feel bad at 20 miles, you're normal. If you don't feel bad at 26 miles, you're abnormal."

      FUNNY... but true.

I last hiked a marathon 13 years ago while I was living in Denmark. I was exhausted at the finish, but it was a 'good' kind of exhaustion. My 51 year old body would need some conditioning hikes before trying this again. Have fun!

I will be camping Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I have reserved site 29. If anyone wants to split the site with me, just leave a message here. BTW, I'm over 65 so the site is only costing me $10 a night. If I can split that with someone it makes for really inexpensive camping. Thom H.

Sunset is 6:13; need a cushion if things don't fall in place. Quite possibly will be taking 11 hours. And, it seems we always start late. More later.
