FNST Western Corridor Hiking Series - Hike 11

Western Corridor Hiking Series  Hike 11 Silver Lake to Cypress Lakes Preserve

Wed. Jan. 29 - Karen Hill

Meet: Cypress Lakes Preserve TH

One hike length only: 9 miles

We'll shuttle to the Silver Lake TH in the Withlachoochee State Forest.  We'll begin our hike on the well-known and quite spectacular Silver Lake Trail.  The last part of this hike is through a little traveled area with EXCELLENT birding.  We had wild turkeys in front of us on the trail and saw many, many other birds on a recent trip.  This area also includes a gorgeous boardwalk style foot bridge built by a group of college students with the help of some FTA long-timers.

What to Bring:--> 2 liters or quarts of water. Lunch and snacks. The water is not a guideline.  It is a requirement for this hike.  Snacks and Lunch.  Sunscreen, bug spray and binoculars are optional.

Carpooling:  If you would like to carpool, please post as a comment.

Hello all - I am afraid I have to cancel this hike. I am so sorry for the last minute notification. I expected the rain to be worse laster on, but aside from that I have a relative emergency I need to address at home. Mike if you are still going would you please lead those who come without seeing this?

I find it is best to ignore the weather reports. We had a great hike with not a drop of rain and reasonably cool hikin temperature. Fun we had!

It was raining as we drove up I-75 but nary a drop during the hike. It was chilly (around 50) but once we had been hiking a while we started taking off layers. The Withlacoochee was as beautiful as always. We stopped for lunch by the river just past the turnoff for the Windmill trail, by the lovely "rapids." We got moving again quickly so we wouldn't cool off. 9.2 miles.

Can you give me an estimate what time we might be off the trail?

    • Karen Hill

Hi Carly, Assuming we start at 9 am I would expect we would finish by 1 pm (including stops).

I think my afternoon schedule is a little too tight and I'm going to have to drop out. Sorry to miss it!

Sorry but I have to drop out. Had an auto accident and am temporarily without a vehicle. Hope to be back on the road soon.
