FNST Western Corridor Hiking Series - Hike 12b

Western Corridor Hiking Series Hike 12 SR 50 spur to Lachoochee Road (with River Loop)

Sun. Feb. 9 - Karen Hill

Meet: Circle K Shell

Length:  8 miles.

The hike will be in the Richloam Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest.  If you haven't hiked here before this will be a good chance to become acquainted.  The river loop is a beautiful stretch that goes along the Withlacoochee River.  HUGE cypress trees and hobgoblin knees! The habitat and aura of the Richloam is different from the Croom and Citrus tracts.

What to Bring:--> 2 liters or quarts of water. Lunch and snacks. The water is not a guideline.  It is a requirement for this hike.  Snacks and Lunch.  Sunscreen and bug spray are optional.

Carpooling:  If you would like to carpool, please post as a comment.

I always enjoy hiking with the Dynamic Duo from Canada and I'm disappointed that you both won't be joining us on this hike, but I'm very impressed that you are doing the 26.7 miler. Happy trails!

Is there parking at the trailhead for a small 25' motorhome? Thanks.

    February 4, 2014

    • Karen H.

Bryan, we'll be meeting at the Circle K and then driving to where the trail crosses Lacoochee Claysink Rd. The majority of cars will be left here along the roadside. It is a long stretch of little used and wide dirt Rd. I think there is room for your RV. Alternatively, you could probably leave in at the Circle K and catch a ride with someone.

Map above courtesy of Mike Nelson, who is leading this same hike tomorrow (Wed): He also says the distance is more like 8.7 miles and that anyone wishing to skip the lovely river trail loop at the end will cut off 2.5 miles.

    Hi
I have hiked a bit, but would love to join a group who can teach me the roaps... is this a good place to start? Are these hikes as simple as "show and go" ?
And as with Sherrie.. what's the estimated time frame ? Looking forward to it!

    February 3, 2014

    • Karen H.

It will be show and go in the sense that you show up and stay with the group. The only difference is that we meet in the morning at the END of the trail and shuttle to the start. Those who use their vehicles to shuttle in the morning will need a ride back to their cars at the end of the hike, but it makes for an easier finish for the majority of hikers, since they can hop in their cars and drive home.

I would like to do this one but am sailing on the Lynx in the afternoon. Not sure I would have time to get to St Pete by 3 or so? Anybody have a time frame for this hike?

    February 3, 2014

    • Karen H.

Hi Sherrie, I think we will easily be done by 1 pm - this is assuming a 9 am start and slow 2 mph pace. Should give you enough time to get to St Pete.
