FNST Western Corridor Hiking Series - Hike 14

Western Corridor Hiking Series  Hike 14  Ranch Road to SR 471

In the Green Swamp West.  On the FNST about 3 miles west of SR 471

mid-Nov. 2013

Wed. Feb. 26 - Mike Nelson

We continue south on the Western Corridor of the Florida National Scenic Trail through the Green Swamp West from Ranch Road to the MacNeil Entrance on SR 471.  We will meet at 8:30 AM and shuttle to Ranch Road to begin the day's hike!

10.2 miles.

This is the last hike in this series led by the Suncoast Chapter.  The fifteenth and final hike of the series will be led by David Waldrop and others from the Heartland Chapter: 13 miles through the Green Swamp East.

From our (Suncoast) Chapter - I want to thank Karen Hill, Mike Nelson, Gordy Hawkins, Amanda Hus, Linda Dawson and Mitch Almon for their outstanding leadership with the hikes.

Thanks to following people from other FTA Chapters.  These folks led hikes, did maintenance, shuttled cars and told some wild stories!

Mike Mais, Bob Jones, Jacques Steer - Crackers Chapter

Linda and Bill Taylor - Hallifax/St. John's Chapter

David Waldrop, Janice Anderson - Heartland Chapter

Good hike. Good turnout, in spite of weather predictions of rain (there were just a few sprinkles towards the end.) There was some confusion with the car shuttle to the trailhead during which we lost one hiker, but we're allowed 10%, right? The long distance (20-mile) hikers went ahead with the promise to meet us after they doubled back, but we fooled them (unintentionally) by having lunch at the 8-mile camping area which had a nicer view than the Gator Hole camp but was not visible from the trail. Thanks go to Sue, our sweep, and all the hardy souls that made this an enjoyable hike.

Yes, you certainly fooled us. We thought we were having lunch with you. Seems like we fooled you, too - or something. We actually hiked the entire segment from where we left off the week before...lol!

Awesome hike as usual! I hope the round trip hikers missed the downpour I ran into headed north. It was a real soaker!!

It could have been worse. I've found that a little rain gear goes a long way.

Where are you shuttling to? I will be a little bit late but would like to catch up to the group.

I have edited the marker for the MacNeil entrance on the map. If you are coming north on SR 471, pass Colt Creek State Park on your right and just north of the bridge over the Withlacoochee River is the parking area for the trailhead on the left. See the map for the coordinates.
