Ever wonder about walking at a pace? When you see "22 minute miles" in a hike description, do you have a good idea how it feels to walk at that pace? Do you know what your comfortable walking pace is?
We ask everyone who wants to attend to go for a couple of walks of a mile or more beforehand to gauge his or her comfortable walking pace. You can do this in a variety of ways - from using a GPS, pedometer or smartphone app to using nothing but a watch.
1) Low tech: Go to a local school track and walk a mile. How many minutes was that on your watch? :-) You can go anyplace where the distance is known - and simply do the math. Example: If it took me 28 minutes to walk the paved loop (1.25 miles) at Lettuce Lake once - 28 minutes /(divided by) 1.25 miles = 22.4 minutes per mile.
2) Gadgets like pedometers and GPS units will do it all for you. There are many Smartphone apps. We like Runkeeper. It's free :-)
Come out to Lettuce Lake Park and learn about pacing and how you can use it to increase your cardiovascular fitness.
