celebrate national trails day. and enjoy the beach.

ok please read carefully. if you do not fit the paddle i will ask you to not go.

 1. you must have open water paddle experience.

2. all safety equipment required by the coast guard.

3. the ability to self rescue  ( this means get back in your kayak if you roll out/off

that said here's the plan ..........

its a 3 mile paddle each way.

paddle out to the north end of the key. the rest of the day is yours to explore  everything anclote key has to offer. swimming, shelling,  beach combing, snorkeling, paddle around the key, visit the light house. or just soak up he sun.

what to bring.

beach items that fit in your kayak.

water or drinks for the day.

food.

suntan lotion

hat

sunglasses

rain gear (is  there a chance of rain? )

again i can not stress this enough. if you have never been in open water please do not sign up. weather can change in a moment and become dangerous.  your lack of experience will only endanger other.

I'd give this event more than 5 stars if I could. Things I learned: Alex: bring pliers or tweezers to pull out sand spurs; Allen: Scorpius and Sagittarius are at the center of the universe; kevin: there is inland entrance to the North Beach area which precludes paddling into the Gulf to get to premier camping spots (also, he's a bug magnet!!) Seriously, I was honored to spend the weekend with an awesome group of paddler campers. The water was clear, the sun was bright, the sand was sugary-soft and plentiful, the sunset was magnificent (so many shades of red after the sun went down!) and the conversation was humorous! Many thanks to Kevin for making this an overnight adventure. Can't wait to see the photos.

Sorry Elizabeth but there was a slight bit of confusion there. I was pointed towards Sagitarius as the center of the GALAXY, not the center of the universe. Strange as it may seem, the universe actually has no center (although you need someone like Lawrence Krauss or Brian Greene to explain that properly).

there has been an interest by a few attendees to spend the night on the island. if you are interested in spending the night please let me know. i will have to call park ranger to give them a head count for that. so please let me know asap. if all that want to go do not want to camp. we will not camp . as it was posted as a day trip. i would be willing to go back in a few weeks and spend the night if you want to.

Sorry this isn't ASAP, I just forgot (they say your memory is the first thing to go-I can't remember the first). Anyway, I'm game for an overnighter if the others are too.

Will you consider camping overnight? The sunset is incredible from Anclote beaches but I don't want to paddle back in the dark.

Well, I was ready to undertake the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior a few years back when it got canceled. So I'm pretty sure I can handle this, but I don't own a kayak....yet.

This sounds like fun. I "may" be getting a kayak next week; however, if it doesn't pan out, is there a place to rent one at the launch? Also, never been a mile offshore, but have kayaked a lot and can roll and recover. So....I guess maybe I'll just see what kind of weather conditions we have before I commit that day. Will that be ok?

    May 21, 2014

its 3 miles to the key. i have paddled this when its windy and sea s are over 2 ft. its scary. .

      May 22, 2014

      May 22, 2014

  • kevin

please list any long paddle trips . like multi days that you have done. and if you have experienced frightening conditions. me i have done 12 days on the suwannee . 235. + miles.

4 days 80 miles on the withlacoochee.

7 days 100 miles thru the everglades.

    May 22, 2014
