Trail Maintenance @ Upper Hillsborough River

It's that time of the year again! We will be doing mowing, lopping, touching up on the blazing and other minor thing's. We will be camping Friday night thru Sunday so if anyone wants to camp, we will be staying at the group site. The entrance to the camp ground in on CR54 right next to the RXR Tracks. This trail is really starting to get some life back into it and it has become a really nice trail. I hope everyone can come out and enjoy it. I will post the gate combo and more important info as time gets closer.

UPDATE: Here is the latest news, for everyone that is camping, the gate code is 3891. There are multiple locks on the gate, you will want to use the one that the letters "REC" engraved on it. As soon as you go thru the gate, the camp ground will be on your left.

For the campers and everyone else, we will meet and have a short meeting at the north trail head (SR54) around 8:30 and start work by 9:00.

The plan is to have 2 groups, one will start at the north trail head and work south, the other group will start at the south end and work north.

For those that have never been here before, there are NO restroom facilities or water sources, but there are local stores with-in a couple of miles.

I will bring what tools I have but I will ask if everyone could loppers, rakes, paint brush's or what ever you may have.  I will have a chain saw in case we need to cut some big stuff. We will also have some mowers and brush cutters there as well.

Justin, I'll bring a couple of pairs loppers and rakes and some small paint brushes. Where are we going to set up in the campground?
I went out there last Saturday to look around. The camping area is pretty spread out. I would like to get there before 5:00.

    Please let me know.

    • JUSTIN S.

Sounds good, the stuff we have the better. As far as the campsite, I planed on using the fire pit closet to the tracks as the community fire pit, so any site that you want around that that's in decent shape.

Justin, never been on the UHP so I spent a few hours today starting at the southern trail head and traveling about 3 miles north. Wow, what a gem this location is. So many different different eco-systems from hard wood forest, open prairie to glass lands, I was really impressed. The trail definitely needs some major maintenance. In places, the forest has taken control and other places I couldn't tell a trail existed. Lots of grass cutting is needed and some new blazing. I'm still hoping to make it on the 17th. Question, how many trains run by the campground at night? I must have heard a half dozen trains while I was out there. Remember to bring ear plugs! :)

    October 5, 2014

    • JUSTIN S.

You might want to bring some earplugs but they usually stop running by 11:00. Hopefully we will have a mower up there but it's currently down for repairs

      October 5, 2014

  • JUSTIN S.

I also wanted to remind everyone that is camping, please bring chair's to sit in. There are no picnic tables or benches at the camp ground.

      September 15, 2014
