Weekend Backpacking Citrus

October 6 -7, Weekend Backpacking, Citrus Tract Withlacoochee State Forest. Come out for the first overnight of the fall season. We did this hike last year and had great early fall weather for camping out on Saturday night. On Saturday, we will hike the D loop over 8 miles south to the primitive camp for the night. Meet at the Mutual Mine Campground Trailhead parking area at 11:00. I will drop a couple gallons of water at the forest road crossing near camp before the hike, so have around 3 quarts with you for the hike and setting up camp. The hike out on Sunday will be on the forest road till we get past the Tillis Hill Campground.  If you are new to these weekend backpacking trips, feel free to PM me with any gear questions or for some low-cost, lightweight ideas to help make your hike more enjoyable.

Great group of backpackers. Hot weather, then flooded trails, followed by thunderstorms, then rain all night. We even had a box of wine in the Adventure Outfitters tradition. Thanks everyone, it was a good way to get ready for the season.

Hi Darren, please confirm that the Mutual mine campground is the same as mutual mine recreation area, shown on the FT map #27. also, when you say you are dropping off a couple of gallons of water, will that be about a quart each? How can we contribute to this supply? Can we resupply at Tillis Hill?

    October 3, 2012

    • Darren M.

I don't have FT map #27, but it is the same. I drop two 5 gallon jugs, and we usually have almost a whole jug go unused. You can resupply (water only) at TH. We will walk past TH Sunday morning, but there should not be a need to stop.

I will be backing out from this overnighter. My buddy and I are going to hike the entire loop that day instead. Maybe we will cross paths on the way. We will probably be starting around 7 o'clock in the morning. Have fun everyone.

Not new to backpacking, but am to the group. Anyway, gotta withdraw because now I have to work : ( Just a quick note for new people - its good to have a good pair of (broken-in) hiking shoes. Critical. Take it from someone who didn't do that once....only once.

After dayhiking 8.2 miles with 12 lbs the other day, plus heat, I was really tired next day, and on this trip, we must hike out 8 miles again next to return. Its a reality check for sure. I need more time to train.
Been carrying 25 and practicing, but the mileage I have trained up to is less (4 miles, not 8). This trip have to carry alot of water. This might be a good day hike for me, if I could go along for a ways, and backtrack while everyone goes on.
I too am a minimalist amap, so I would like to have my equipment commented on as well, if you schedule a time, I will try to make it. Thankyou Darren. And thank you Debbie for putting that out there. My tent is 2.9 for 2. It would be squeezy, but I would be willing to loan it out or share it also, or my stuff, to lighten the load. I hate to miss the trip, but if you'all think I should wait, I will take the advice of the seasoned ones, and wait. Thanks (comments appreciated)

Anna I was on the same day hike with you. What a blast!!! I don't know if it helps but a backpack carries the weight on your hips which makes longer distances tolerable (if packed correctly).

Use to going solo, working on being a minimalist and fully self-contained. Since we're only doing a one night camp and with a group, I'll be taking out half of what I'm use to anyways. But if you do have a pre-meeting I would be interested just to see and learn different packing ideas. There is always room for more education. Only issue I will have on the trip is that I am trying out a new backpack (Osprey Arial 75), so I will be traveling as light as possible anyways (bringing solo tent). The pack is bigger than necessary for this trip, but I'm working on Backpacking Alaska someday and hope to work out all those comfort adjustments on this trip. If there is a beginner who does not have a light tent, I have no trouble bringing and sharing my 3-man backpacker. When you split it up between two people it's the same weight as the solo. If rain is in the forcast I do have a 2oz. vestibule I can bring along with the 3-man that could be added to store the packs in.

  • Darren M.

We have several people RSVP'd who have not been on the backpacking trips before. I would be willing to do a meeting one night next week to bring your loaded pack and go over the trip. Please keep in mind that this is harder than a dayhike, and not a beginners backpacking trip. If you are a backpacker, but have not been on one of our trips yet that is fine. Again, if you are new please reconsider your RSVP and post feedback about meeting next week. There will be beginners trips added to the calendar.

Thanks Anne, I saw this one too but the loops are not named. I'm guessing we're hiking to Taylor Camp??

      September 25, 2012

    • Darren M.

That's a good looking map. Yes Jim, 8 miles down to Taylor.

      September 26, 2012

  • Jim E.

So what's total miles, 8 miles in and 8 mile out? Can someone supply a URL to a trail map? Not having a lot of luck finding a trail map.

What are we doing about food? I'm presuming everyone brings their own - P&J for lunch, prepackaged trek meal (do we have a "stove"), and P&G for breakfast. Yes?

    September 25, 2012

    • Darren M.

Aside from everyones great company on the trail, yes we are on our own.

I'm excited to be a part of your group.
What is the common practice in the area for storing food to keep the critters out. Since it's only an overnight hike I'm leaving the bear vault behind and left the bag I usually use to hang in the trees behind in Michigan.

    September 25, 2012

    • Darren M.

Just keep it in your tent. If you leave it in your pack outside overnight, it is possible a racoon or field mouse will chew a hole in your pack. If we were in Ocala NF, we would hang.

      September 25, 2012

  • Darren M.

The only water hole is Stage Pond, which we will pass about a mile before camp. After setting up camp, anyone who wants to can walk to the forest road crossing where I will have a few gallons stashed to top off.

    • Jon

Wow! An empty fifty pound pack. It doesn't seem like you could put too much in it. I think mine only weighs about 5 pounds.

      1 · September 16, 2012

    • Effie D.

You just need a pack that's good for about 3-4 days. I did 5 days in Machu Picchu with 32 lbs. in my 3-4 day pack. Water excluded of course. Grand Canyon 28 lbs. plus 1 bladder.

      September 25, 2012

  • Darren M.

Can't, most of us have at least a two hour drive up there, and I also have to drive in to drop off the water. If anyone is concerned about the heat, mileage, etc, please reconsider as this is not a beginners backpacking trip.

    September 25, 2012

  • Anna B.

Can we get started earlier thn 11:00? It's going to be warm, that is a wee bit late. Just a thought....

    September 24, 2012

  • Sig O.

I may just be doing the whole loop with my buddy that day instead. So as soon as I know if he can go I will opt out. Otherwise I'll be camping with ya all.

    September 24, 2012

  • Darren M.

If anyone wants a gear list, scroll back in the calendar to last year's hike or January's Croom backpack.

I'd like to go but really don't want to drive by myself? Is anyone from St. Pete or South area? I can cover the gas and whatever else you think is fair trade for the ride.
