Day Hike! Off the beaten path at Flatwoods Park at BRUCE B. DOWNS trailhead.

Meet at the Flatwoods Trailhead on Bruce B. Downs Blvd in New Tampa. If coming from I-75, get off at Bruce B Downs exit and go east/north. Trailhead on right side of road just past Macaroni Grill and Chili's.

Turn is easy to miss due to road construction so keep an eye out for the turnoff just past Chili's. $2.00 parking fee. Water and restrooms available.

If traveling south on Bruce B Downs, you will have to make a U turn at the light in front of Home Depot due to the road construction. It is easier if you can come from the other direction as you cannot currently turn left into the park from Bruce B Downs.

If you are not familiar with this park, you may wonder where are the woods amidst all this development but you will be pleasantly surprised!

Total is about 7 miles- give or take.

We will be on some dual use bike/hike trails but expect areas of unmarked, primitive, abandoned trail and infrequently used forest roads. Some sections will be uneven, muddy, overgrown with little to no discernible trail tread.

Feral hog rooting is significant. (hope we get to see them!)

We will have to ford a creek at one or more locations. We may have one service road gate to climb over.

Please wear proper wilderness hiking footwear. Bring water, food, whatever personal items you need, ground cloth to sit on during break.

This activity is sponsored by the Suncoast Chapter of the Florida Trail Association. You need not be an FTA member to participate but we encourage you to take a moment to learn about the FTA and consider being a part of our community.

Such a wonderful day! Saw wildlife I've never seen (rattler, hog, butterflies, a doe), great conversation, and perfect weather. Thanks so much for planning and leading, Lenny! Your hikes are always great!

Just got back from a dry run of tomorrow's route... Perfect weather, no bugs, some wet spots but came back with completely dry socks.... trekking pole helpful for those like me with less than perfect balance.... beautiful out there today.... saw a family of about 8 all black hogs.... you will see much evidence of their presence... flock of a 6-8 turkeys..... there is a control burn out there but it looked to be away from where we will hike..

You know I did!!!!!! Your the best!!!! Plus I enjoyed the variety of terrain. Next time you feel like going at the last minute please don't hesitate to give me a shout so I can learn my way around. It was only a 20 minute drive for me. I should of looked at a map first so I was familiar with the area. You could have had some fun and left me behind anywhere and then placed bets on how long it would of taken me to find my way back out. :-)

What beautiful weather we were blessed with...I had an enjoyable and incredibly peaceful day hanging out with you all. Glad everyone was a good sport about the two creek crossings, muddy spot on the Panther Trail, as well as the seriously hog damaged areas on our route! Y'all made my day! Thanks!

Will try to make it. Have been sick all week. (ask me about festival)

    November 8, 2012

I'm looking forward to the hike. It will be my first with the group. My back has been giving me problems and I've been hoping it will be healed enough to participate. I was going to cancel today because I didn't want to take a spot when there is a waiting list. I see there is no longer anybody on that list. Under these circumstances I'd like to remain signed up. I'll e-mail tonight or early tomorrow if I have to cancel, otherwise I will see you all tomorrow.

Look forward to seeing old friends and meeting some new ones. As you can see there is a wait list. If you have RSVP'd to attend but have changed your mind, would you kindly amend your RSVP to reflect that. Most people know that I want to accommodate everyone who wants to come out to hike. New hikers, please be sure to read the hike description thoroughly and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
