Join me on a post Thanksgiving Day hike!
LET US GIVE THANKS... for fresh air, our beautiful natural woods, AND that we will not be jammed elbow to elbow with a bunch of voracious, frenetic bargain hunters....
This is a pleasant, mostly shaded trek.
No fee for parking. Water but no restrooms available at the trail head. Total distance will be about 7.5 miles. We will start off taking an unmapped, primitive, rough in parts, lightly used canopied segment for first 1.5 miles or so. There may be two patches of mud or low standing water on this section.
The route then takes us on a footpath along the Hillsborough River to Dead River Park where there are restrooms, water, picnic tables, and a very pleasant scenic spot to take a break. The return leg will take us on the unpaved and beautifully canopied Dead River Road.
This route has been one of our favorites!
Bring food, water, possibly insect repellent.... proper hiking footwear important. Hiking stick may be helpful as extensive hog damage has rendered much of tread rather uneven .
Old Ft. King Trail Head turnoff is 300 yards south of Hillsborough River State Park on hwy 301. Coming from Zephyrhills, it is approx 5.3 miles south from the intersection of 301 and Chancey Rd.
From the intersection of Fowler Ave and 301 it is 9 miles north
This activity is sponsored by the Suncoast Chapter of the Florida Trail Association. There is no fee to hike and you need not be an FTA member to participate but we encourage you to take a moment to learn about the FTA and consider being a part of our community.
We did this route last 4/27. Also for last January's Stone Soup hike.
[masked] day of hike
..... quote from WILLIAM BARTRAM, English botanist, commenting on Florida's astonishing natural beauty while on his journey in the 18th century exploring the southern colonies..........
"Whilst I, continually impelled by a restless spirit of curiosity, in pursuit of new productions of nature, my chief happiness consisted in tracing and admiring the infinite power, majesty, and perfection of the great Almighty Creator"
