> Hike: Chinsegut Nature Center to Tucker Hill
> Meeting Pt: Tucker Hill Fire Tower in the Croom Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest
Note: Fire Tower is about 1.5 miles to east of Dempsey Rd
> Distance/Pace: Point to Point Hike of apprx 10 miles.
> Pace: about 20 - 22 minutes per mile. With breaks anticipate 4 1/2 hours.
> What to Bring: 1 1/2 - 2 quarts of water, snack to eat en route, sandwich for when we break, sunscreen, insect repellent.
Instructions: From Tucker Hill we will carpool to the kiosk on the southern point on bottom of the triangle formed by US 41 and Snow Memorial Hwy (AKA CR 581/ CR 481).
FYI: At this time, on this route, the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST) Western Corridor thru-hike has about 8 miles of next-to-county-road-hiking. Although in the grand scheme of things it is not that bad a walk, we will skip that road segment (we will be only 1/4 mile from where it ends), add a nature loop and then continue on the trail.
Hike: The hike will go around the three mile Chinsegut Nature Trail. The three miles is no great shakes but nice to know about as it crosses a prairie on a boardwalk, goes by a bird blind and a small sink hole - who knows, you may want to get up very early some morning to show the kids/grandkids a bird blind. We will then hike along Deer Run dirt road for a few miles before entering Perry Oldenburg Wildlife area. From Perry O we will take the trail that connects to Croom A loop and then the mile south to Tucker Hill Fire Tower.
