Purgatory on Earth (POE) Summer Hike # 3 - "15 Barking Dogs' Hike
"15 barking dog hike" would have been easy to avoid. It was said there would be violent, vicious, ferocious dogs. And, without question, this being at the end of July we know the weather: oppressive sun, oppressive heat, oppressive humidity and rain and lightning at the caprice of nature. The finale of the Summer Hiking series would serve as warning for the months to come of the retribution that is due for one's evil deeds. The world would be a better place once the POE sentencing was executed.
Dogs: Fifteen were invited. Only two came. But at least two came, so what if one was arthritic and the other came from a Taco Bell commercial. There could have been more. Next time I bet there will be thirty. You can count on it.
Mother nature's hot flashes were expected release their ire, but only a feeble temperament appeared. Humidity was high but cloud coverage for the whole hike and temperatures only in the mid 80s.
So what about the hike? A controlled burn had occurred a week before leaving charcoaled scrub, logs and, instead of green leaves, the turkey oak leaves were brown and dried. We saw white rings painted on the trees indicating possible red-cockaded woodpecker nests. Witnessed orange blazes that were blackened over most likely by a disgruntled neighbor to discourage hikers from seeing the trail and going near the property. Enough humidity to drench a hiking shirt. We saw animal foot prints in the sand and the flowers of the season. There was a small presence of muscadine grapes. Gopher turtle holes and skeletons of a deer and a hawk were found. At the turnaround point was the sign indicating the end of this segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail awaiting future land management approval to proceed. It was good company today and just the right place to be on Wednesday, July 27, 2011.
