Out of Your Comfort Zone,
Part I - 16 mile hike//possible 8 mile bail out option
Saturday January 21, 2012, 8:00 a.m.
McDonalds, 31038 Cortez Blvd, Brooksville, FL 34602
Grand Loop starting at the Croom Fire Tower (the orange blaze
perimeter of loops A - B - C)
Hiking Pace: 20 - 22 minutes per
Items to bring: Bright clothing, sandwich, snack, fluids for
8 hours (there will be water available at half way point if anyone
wants it), sunscreen, visor, insect repellant, hiking stick, last
will and testament.
Why hike 16 miles? Several years
ago I went on 15 mile hike led by Citrus Section Leader Neil Fox.
When I asked him about the distance, he said, " I believe it is good
for people to go out of their comfort zone every once in a
while." And I liked that philosophy.
How do you
know if you can go that far? The rule of thumb I use is this: If you
can do the distance over two days you can do the distance in one
day, e.g., if you can hike 10 miles one day, and 6 the next, you are
capable of 16 miles at one time. Same for 9 miles one day, 7
miles the next, 8 miles and 8 miles, or any other combination.
Note: you will be tired but are capable of completing the
Possible 8 Mile Option: If there are some
that want to hike the first half and bail out, that is fine, but if
you are car pooling with someone, it would be best that you all go
the same distance so the bailout folks don't have to wait a few
hours for those doing the full Grand Tour.
Now is your chance
to test yourself. It will be fun and a neat experience to
place in your mental and physical resume. Yes you can do
So, who's in?
Note: It is small game hunting
season from December all the way into March. Small game
hunting should not have any affect on hiking.
