Carmel vanHoek will be guiding us to some of her favorite locations and hopefully we will see some Pygmy Fringe Trees, Chionanthus pygmaeus, in bloom. We will also be on the lookout for the Scrub Palmetto, Sabel etonia, and the Longbristle Beaksedge, Rhynchospora megaplumosa. It is rumored that on the north side of the river is the rare fern, Thelypteris serrata, or Tooted Lattice-Vein Fern, and we'll see if we can find that as well.
We'll meet at the picnic area and pass by the restrooms on the way to walk the Oxbow Trail. This walk will be less than 2 miles. From there we'll drive to the youth camp to see what is growing along the water. It's a cool and pretty walk from the feeder creek to the main river where some Manatees have been spotted recently.
Last stop will be Dude Lake, a nice place to lunch or just relax under the pines.
Call if you are running late or get lost.
