Florida's Rare Applecacti

Presented by Alan Franck PhD

Alan Franck has just completed his PhD on the Florida native Applecactus and will be joining us to share his knowledge of these rare plants, also known as the Prickly Applecactus, West Coast Prickly-Apple, Caribbean Applecactus, Indian River Prickly-Apple or Simpson’s Applecactus. These endangered species are found only in coastal areas of central and south Florida and the Caribbean.

"I just wanted to study something in Florida, something rare it seems. And the cactus presented itself to me. And I’m glad because I got to travel to the Caribbean...I tend to research what I feel is neglected.”

Alan is on the staff of the Institute for Systematic Botany (ISB) which was established in 1990 to promote basic research in plant systematics and to coordinate research, educational and service programs in plant systematics at the University of South Florida. He has also been involved with the Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants, the online website data source http://florida.plantatlas.usf.edu that many of us use for information on Florida native plants.
