BABA BRINKMAN

Baba Brinkman is an award winning Canadian rap artist, playwright, and former tree-planter who worked in the Rocky Mountains every summer for over ten years, personally planting more than one million trees. He is also a scholar with a Masters in Medieval and Renaissance English Literature. His thesis drew parallels between the worlds of hip-hop music and literary poetry. After graduating in 2003, Baba began his career as a rap troubadour.

To date Baba has written or co-written four hip-hop theatre shows, all of which have toured the world and played at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and off-Broadway. Baba is also the founder of indie label Lit Fuse Records, which represents The Boom Booms, Smoky Tiger, and Mud Sun, as well as his own music. Baba has recorded and released ten solo hip-hop albums since 2004.

The Rap Guide to Evolution and The Canterbury Tales Remixed both recently played extended off-Broadway runs at the Soho Playhouse. The Rap Guide to Evolution won the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award in Edinburgh and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in New York. Baba also has appearances at several regional TED conferences and a guest performance on The Rachel Maddow Show. For his efforts to improve the public understanding of evolution, he won the NCSE’s Friend of Darwin Award in 2013.

When he is not on tour, Baba resides in New York city.

DON ALBERT

"Recalibrating: How Cult Survivors Start All Over (and what we can learn from them)"

Don Albert is a singer-songwriter from NYC who spent twenty years as an active member of - and recruiter for - The Watchtower organization (a.k.a Jehovah's Witnesses), a religious group that practices total shunning of all dissenters.

Having seen at close range the destruction of families by means of this practice, Don became active in the online "ex-jw" community, a great part of which is dedicated to supporting those who have recently been cut off from their families by means of organizes shunning. These online groups include both believers and non-believers, many of whom have learned to get along and look out for each other as each faces the test of starting a new life. Although comfortable calling himself an atheist, Don remains fascinated by the power and beauty of personal religious experience and seeks to help bridge the "language gap" between believers, atheists, and those who prefer to keep the matter private.

Don is currently a test-prep specialist and owner of 2400.org, an SAT tutoring company in New York City. He also teaches guitar and is the Musical Director for The Godless Revival.

I'll try to make last minute arrangements, I'd actually arranged to be picked up after SA earlier because I didn't hear from you yesterday, but I'll see what I can do last minute. If not, my first time there we met other SAers and chatted for about an hour before the event started, so there's always that in case of anything. Thanks for getting back to me, btw.

The comment above's for Joshua, btw, if that wasn't made clear. Also, can you tell me how I can find you so we can chat, please?

I can't wait to meet everyone. I honestly wish there were weekly meet-ups like this. My favorite YouTube Channel on Religion: TheAtheistExperience

I'm new to Sunday Assembly but I would love to be part of a FB group (or any) that encourages communication and planning events outside Sunday Assembly. Count me in. As for the 6th I don't know yet, but I will let you know as soon as I do.

    1 · March 17, 2014

  • Joshua

Yeah Pito, I'm totally still down to talk after Assembly tomorrow! Maybe we can find some way to make an announcement and invite others to join us.

    1 · April 5, 2014

  • Heriberto R.

Hi and morning all. I'd like to speak to Joshua at some point today about whether he or anyone else is still interested in staying and chatting after SA. I've made arrangements, but I can change them if that's not gonna happen anymore.

    Thanks,

    Pito

  • Heriberto R.

Hi, all. Joshua, I know it's early (I just woke up and and got on), but I just thought I'd thank you for all your help and info, ok? Hope to talk some more!

    March 18, 2014

  • Heriberto R.

Right, but I mean I'm interested in talking w/ you, but I'd need an exact end time for then. You see, I take Access-A Ride, and they demand exact end times. Unless this is an unstructured thing you wanna do, where anyone can leave whenever they choose to. At any rate, how long can you stay to chat before you have to cut out on the 6th, Joshua?

    March 17, 2014

    • Joshua

Ah, I see. So far its just you and me -- so lets say, till 5pm? On another note, one thing we need soon is a more general way of communicating with fellow Assemblers, such as a Facebook group. (Rather than a page.) It's possible that other people might be interested, but we just have no way of knowing...

      March 17, 2014

  • Joshua

Anybody interested in lingering after the April meeting to talk non-theistic philosophy? I don't really know the neighborhood so I'm not sure about a where, but if the weather's nice, we could walk across the street to the park.

    1 · March 16, 2014

    • Heriberto R.

I'm in; for how long, Joshua?

      March 17, 2014

    • Joshua

Ya know, whatever. I could talk for hours, but on the other hand, I have homework to do.

      2 · March 17, 2014

  • Heriberto R.

I'll be there, thanks and the feeling's mutual! By the way, do you have Skype, Justina?

    March 9, 2014

  • Heriberto R.

Hey, all! Hey listen, I know how early it is, but I was wondering, has next month's theme already been decided on?

    March 4, 2014

    • Justina W.

Yes! New Beginnings. Great meeting you at the last one!
