looking to go ocean kayaking in the next 4-5 days

I have kayaked and canoed before but I am pretty new to kayaking in the ocean. I'm looking for other ocean kayakers to get out on the water with so I can learn and practice. I'm around anytime during the next 4-5 days; send me a message if you're going kayaking and don't mind someone newer tagging along. (i've got a sit in ocean kayak w/ paddle, spray skirt, etc and am ready to go equipment wise)

It was everything that I hoped it would be. Nobody else from this group showed up but I love making new friends anyway. The guides Lucia and Jeremy were excellent. In the water at 9:55 and out at 11:50. Saw sea lions, Garibaldi and sand sharks. Even had about 10 minutes to snorkel around the kelp forest. Hope to do it again some time.

Thank you Susan. I would like to and will keep in touch. I have a sit-in kayak and am considering a sit-on-top for open ocean. I live in Cerritos area and haul my kayak on my car.

I've never kayaked. Is this a problem?

Hi Steven. That is not a problem but you should read the online reviews of the tour to be prepared. Beach launches start and end in waves breaking at the shore. If you can laugh it off when the wave dumps your kayak and you take a swim then it should not be a problem. If that will bug you then you should start with the regular meetups in Sunset Beach because they start and end in a protected (no waves) cove. This is a good way to get some experience there before trying beach launches.

I just did a beach launch for the first time and it was awesome! Just head straight out..don't try to go sideways, duh, and you'll be fine! you'll get wet but that's OK.

WARNING: July 13 may not be the best day to go kayaking the Sea Caves because the 3Rs at the La Jolla Sea caves.
This is an annual "snorkel tour" run by the lifeguards that typically puts 50 to 70 snorkelers in the water INSIDE and AROUND the sea caves all morning. It will be a nuisance to kayak with so many people in the water, and you may not be able to kayak inside the caves at all. Consider joining the 3Rs event in the morning and going kayaking in the afternoon in Mission Bay or San Diego Bay (can provide you tips for best routes). It's free and you will get to experience the Sea Caves as you'll never be able to experience on your own. The lifeguards are pretty competent and keep everyone safe. The event is posted at http://www.sddivers.com/3rs.html but there's not much info on their web. This Facebook event has a lot more details: https://www.facebook.com/events/205323352950598/

Ask OEX if they are going to enter the caves, they might not. I've been on OEX La Jolla Sea Caves tour long time ago and I did not find it worth the money because they would not let people kayak inside caves. It's good if you have kids but for grownups the real adventure is to snorkel the sea caves. It's only once a year and it's FREE! I'm not trying to crash your meetup event, just trying to give the best advice from a local.

Thanks again Luca. Without a doubt local advice has been the most valuable part of every trip I have taken and I travel a lot. I am sticking with the plan either way because I have rearranged other things around this date. I hope to stick around and snorkel the caves after the kayak tour.

You do not need a kayak. OEX La Jolla rents kayaks and offers tours. I signed up online at diveandkayaklajolla/kayak/kayaktours for the 9 AM tour which is now at 10 AM.

For anybody that is still interested... I just received a call from OEX La Jolla stating that the Caves tour is delayed one hour so it is at 10 AM. I will be on site at 9:15 AM. If anybody wants to hang around afterward I love to snorkel and the kelp beds look like a fun place to do it.

Hello to anybody still interested in kayaking La Jolla caves next Saturday July 13. I signed up online ($69) for the 9 AM kayak tour and will be at OEX La Jolla at 8:30 AM. Hope to see some people from this group there. This shows as 15 attending but due to the unorganized state of this event everyone should go online at diveandkayaklajolla/kayak/kayaktours and make their own reservation. I will be there either way. The kayak/snorkel tour looks fun too so I might stay around for that tour that starts right after the kayak only tour ends. If anybody can get a discount then speak up for everyone else. Sorry for the disorganization but I am not the originator just a lover of kayaking and snorkeling trying to have some fun and meet new friends. I have my own kayak but will not be bringing it this trip.

Hi, just move back to the OC after living in the east cost for close to 3 years. I picked up kayaking over there have been paddling with one of those 8ft kayaks you find at Dicks sporting goods. I would love to go out on the Newport harbor or huntington if someone don't mind showing me around.

OK, I am not the originator but I would like to close this loop by proposing Saturday July 13 at La Jolla Caves. If anybody wants to join me let me know and if enough people want to go I will do some checking into a group discount. There is an option of just renting kayaks or taking a tour. I would like a tour. Either way a reservation is suggested.
Just FYI it could be considered disrespectful to the Sunset Beach Kayaking Group organizers to plan outside activities on their page so for future events like this we should do it by email or start/join a separate group for them.

Also, Dale... if you're interested in proposing this to another group, I can post it on mine. Message me.

Thanks Gary and Victor. I am OK with any Sunday morning except 7/7 and the earlier AM the better. That 60% discount sounds great so we should plan around that if we get enough interest. Posting to other groups would help with that. I have some Friends and Fun members that will be interested. How about 7/14?

Has anyone kayak out of Dana Point. I volunteer on the Tallship Pilgrim 3-4 days a week. I see lots of kayaker and paddle boarders. They launch at baby beach. The west end of harbor

FYI You can't take a kayak out of the harbor in Sunset, the Naval base will not allow you to pass, so if you want to do a sea trip, you will have to talk to Andrew abut how.

Newport Harbor. I stopped going to Huntington Harbor because of that limitation. There are several rentals in Newport.

Do we know when we are going and where ??

    April 8, 2013

  • Victor M.

I am sometimes down to spontaneously go kayaking. I own two kayaks, both sit in. One is a recreational and the other is a touring/sea kayak. I often go outside of Newport Harbor and then South down the coast. I also belong to a Sea Kayaking Meetup, whose members are pretty serious about open water kayaking. I'm patient with "newbies" and have a spare boat. Where I launch is great for harbor or open water paddling. Whoever posted this, pipe up and let us know what you're thinking. :)
