Edgewood - Hand Drumming workshops during the EVENING! Everyone is welcome!

Everyone is welcome! (you MUST rsvp if you are coming - PLEASE!)

Class size of 4 min (includes me) to host the class   Max 8-10 players

Come and play West African rhythms in an informal setting in Edgewood (40 mins from Seattle, Tacoma or Enumclaw.)

We are a group of amateur drum players (who are also great in my opinion) who meet once a week to learn new rhythms and play together.  All ages over 18, skill levels, and experience levels should have a good time.  We have extra drums for a $5.00 rental - just bring yourself!

The style of drumming we study is taken from West Africa from such countries as Mali, Ghana, Guinea, and Senegal.  We use mostly the djembe or ashiko type of drums with accompaniment with the Dununs, bells, and some times a shaker.

We usually meet on Tuesday evening, but we sometimes change our schedule based on holidays and such.  Our play time is formal and at times informal and we jam for about one and a half hours.

If you are a beginning drummer or have never tried this type of drumming before, feel free to join us - we can accommodate people of all skill levels.  If you are more advanced or possess musical talent in other areas, then by all means come; West African music is different from standard Western music in many ways – seriously…we can provide a challenge for everyone.

Come on down - the more drummers we have the more fun we have!

Along with our amazing Dunun Ensembles, we are adding in a study of Bill Matthews Conga Joy Live.  Over the course of the year will be learning and working on over 100 rhythms from his work plus more! Through our in person live teaching joined with watching each rhythm on a big screen, we will cover a variety of different situations including rhythms for one drum, rhythms for two drums (one player), rhythm dialogues for two players and rhythms in full ensemble.

Easy to learn at all levels!

Drum classes in the city of Seattle or Olympia cost $18.00 - $30.00 for a large group and over $60.00 for a private one hour lesson! This workshop fee is kept reasonable so we all can afford to play. The reason I am doing this is to give people who have a passion to try or learn the hand drum have an inexpensive and safe place to learn and in time they can seek the more advanced artisan teachers in the inner cities.

Workshop donation: $10.00 (with your own drum) $15.00 (workshop and drum rental) Some workshares are available - Must be approved and done ahead of time.  Email me directly.

Is this your first time ever drumming? If you have never drummed before or it's been a long time then we need to schedule a time before the class for a 30 min teaching time for $5.00.  This is done at the Edgewood location in the evening unless we are able to make arrangements ahead of time with the host.  This way we can go over the techniques, how to read the music and such.  If you just show up, you may be in for a surprise and not have the best experience possible.  Call me! or email me[masked] email [masked]

*** Please do not RSVP if you do not intend on coming for sure as I prepare for your arrival *** Min 4 to run a class (3 plus the teacher) ***

In Rhythm,

If you have a dumbeck you may want to consider renting or bringing a djembe, ashiko, conga or such as the dumbeck technique is unique.
