Welcome! If you're looking for gatherings of nerds and geeks - of all stripes, species and varieties - in the Omaha area, you've come to the right place!

What does Super Villain Social... DO?

We're starting to branch out, but the main thing we do is still the weekly social / hangout event. This happens nearly every Friday night, at Legend Coffee & Comics off of 52nd and Leavenworth - from 7pm to midnight.

There is no structure or programming at the regular SVS weekly gathering - just nerds and geeks hanging out. People socialize, play games that are there or that they bring (Cards Against Humanity happens a lot for instance), read, browse the comic store that shares the space or even just hops on their laptops and do their own thing. A lot of the time, the real night owls move over to Village Inn or Perkins after Legend closes at midnight, and keep it going until 3-4am.

But we're starting to try other events too - group movie outings, anti-Super Bowl parties, setting up caravans to nerd conventions, hackathons, LAN / gaming parties & tournaments, holiday parties, etc - all things we've done, or are planning on doing. We're open to ideas though - so please, share them with us if you have any that you think people would like.

Anything nerd and geek related in our area - we'll think about doing, and/or promoting to our members it if you, or anyone else in the area, puts it together. This isn't just about us - there are some great groups in town that put on fun things (like the Omaha Nerd Society and Nerdtron [who we're closely affiliated with]) - check out our Facebook group to get notifications about events we don't put on, as we only share events we're involved with here on Meetup.

What is Super Villain Social... ABOUT?

Super Villain Social is a group that, true to nerd form, was formed as a sort of social experiment, to test a theory. The theory is that nerds & geeks (or whatever term you choose to use) tend to be less social than other subsections of our culture at least partially because we have so few activities, and establishments that cater to "our kind".

Most of us aren't into sports, bars or clubs - we're into reading, movies, gaming, learning... most of which are either solitary activities, or activities you don't meet people during (like movies, or gaming with your friends). We tend to coalesce into small circles of friends, that are usually disconnected from other such pockets of nerds.

Many of us aren't exactly extroverted... human contact with like minded people is important to the happiness of any human being, but difficult for many nerds and geeks - especially the more introverted ones. There are thousands of people into the same things all over town, but how are we going to actually meet them?!?

In short - at a Super Villain Social event (or other events we hear about and share). The experiment is that we specifically try to reach out to all of the different types of nerd & geek that are out there, organize gatherings that would appeal to them/us and give all of us an excuse to meet new, like-minded people.

How has this "experiment" been going so far?

We started this in late 2013, just by telling our friends and setting up events on Facebook, and it's already provided compelling evidence that the theory is sound.

We started as just a small group of nerds and geeks who hung out every Friday night, at Legend Coffee & Comics off of 52nd and Leavenworth. It took a while to catch on, but now we get so many people that we fill up Legend some Fridays.

We've already helped dozens of nerds and geeks find new and awesome like-minded friends. Heck, two people that met at SVS are even getting married!

How can I help SVS?

We don't charge for anything - our organizer pays for everything out of pocket - so we don't have any sort of marketing budget to pay for web ads or other such things. But if we're going to

We rely entirely on cool nerds & geeks like you to tell their cool nerd / geek friends about us, add them to this group, add them to our Facebook group, bring them to events we host (or events other people do that we share), etc - so please do that! :)

What's that funny name about?

It's essentially a joke. You hear a lot that nerds are taking over the world, and if you look around it's definitely true. Google, Facebook, Apples and Microsoft - all created and ran by nerds & geeks. And what type of person tries to take over the world?!?

That's right - Supervillains! haha

To reflect that, Cay (a regular from the first gathering, and head of the awesome local group Nerdtron - who we're closely affiliated with and are helping with their convention in August) came up with the name "Super Villain Social".

If nerds are already taking over the world... imagine how much faster it would happen if we were better connected with each other, and happier because of it?!? haha

Anyway, I digress...

Thanks for checking us out, and I hope we see you at a gathering soon,

PS - We're looking for bigger places that will let us hang out in their space Friday or Saturday nights. If anyone knows of one - PLEASE TELL US - I can assure you, I will make it very much worth your while!

PSS - I (Solo-Man here) pay for this Meetup group, and other misc costs involved with SVS events, with the money I make from my small freelance business. If you, or anyone you know, needs an affordable website, and/or search engine optimization work done - please refer them to 'Big Omaha SEO'. The success of that business is what is allowing us to look into getting a large space of our own. SVS is a personal passion of mine, and if my business does well, I'll have enough money to put into SVS to help it grow faster, and do more for Omaha area nerd & geek kind :)
