Meeting time 8 am (at Thunder Mountain trailhead)!!!!

Distance  10-12 estimated

Elevation Gain  estimated 2500 feet

Difficulty,  strenous, (lots of off trail hiking)

Meetup Fee $ 1

Parking fee, not sure could be $ 5 or so, bring change just in case.

Very Important, info you need to know, before you even think about signing up,

you will have to add to the waitlist and answer some questions, I will be picky for this hike.

**** I have not hiked up Thimble Peak from this side

**** around 6 miles of this hike will be off trail , unknown terrain

*** possible hands on scrambling uphill needed

***no guarantee we will make it up the peak from this side,

*** if it turns out to be a bad scramble, we turn around and do some alternate route,

Meeting Point for the hike (thunder mtn trailhead)

http://goo.gl/maps/UDMct

This is about 3.2 miles past the silver lake dam and before you get to Kirkwood, the trailhead is easy to miss, Just look at your odo and add about 3.2 miles once you reach the dam (and end of silver lake) You know you went to far when you drive through the avalanche area just before kirkwood (there should be not stopping signs) the trailhead is just before that pass, trailhead is on the right side.

Hiking plan,

We meet at the thunder mtn trailhead, see link above, we will carpool to the other trailhead at caples lake (this is a point to point hike and needs a carshuttle!!) taking as little cars as possible.

from the caples lake trailhead we head along the lake and catch the trail towards horse canyon (not going to emmigrant lake) once we get close to thimble peak I will pick a spot where we go off trail and find a way up to thimble peak, this may include a little rock scrambling (if to dangerous we abort that route and take the trail to thunder mtn via horse canyon trail.)

We won't get up to the real peak of thimble but close enough (the real top needs more exposed scrambling / climbing)

we continue downhill towards the kirkwood ski area (the wall) go along that ridge line towards Thunder mtn, depending on what time it is we take the detour to the top of thunder mtn,

we follow the trail down to thunder mtn trailhead where we left some cars,

we retrieve the cars from the other trailhead and drive home.

Weather will be warm!!

(as of Tuesdays forecast) 78 degr. (feels like 86) low 58,  for Kirkwood at 8000 feet.

it will be cooler at elevation, maybe windy, just be prepared, you should know since you really should have done hikes like this.

Water, bring plenty of water for this hike, I recommend around 3 liters or more depending on your needs.

Don't forget

** Sunscreen*** maybe a hat*** Bug Spray*** Food** Windbreaker***

and what else you bring on mountain hikes,

This is not a beginners hike you should know what to expect and bring for this hike!!!

***waiver*** please review, no need to print I bring a sign in sheet

Great hike and fantastic views. But I have to say Mary's pole was unbeatable. I am still waiting for the pole dance :-)

Hello Herr Jenter! Thanks so much for planning this hike - it sounds awesome! I've only skied in this area, never hiked, so I'm excited to discover the Summer Side of Tahoe . Are you driving from the Bay Area to the trailhead the day before or that morning?

Have done car shuttle from Thunder Mt trailhead, hiked to Scout Carson Lake, then over the pass at Covered Wagon Peak (Above Emmigrant Lake), and out at Caples Lake.
