Part night hike to Secret Beach, 16 miles 2000 feet elev. gain (Point Reyes)

HIKE STATS: Start Time 2am Yes I mean 2 AM Sunday Morning

Distance 16 miles loop

Moving speed , usually around 3mph.

Elevation Change +/- 2000ft

Difficulty Advanced, due to distance

Meetup FEE  $1

Organized by Chris J. ** e mail me if you have questions**

Important, this will be a partial ***night hike ***mostly on single track trail, !!!!

Don't forget that head lamp.

***Why so early??** Secret beach / cave is only accesible at minus tides, -1.8 feet at 5.30 am.

we should arrive at sculptured beach at around 5-530am

If we are lucky and the sky is clear (small chance) we have the full moon in the sky and then set into the ocean

The hiking route is pretty much the standard loop  I am doing, except for the secret beach part, many of us have been at Sculptured Beach and wondered what is beyond that one arch / beach and around the next corner. Today will walk under the small arch and continue down the beach and around the next corner, to explore the beach all the way down to Point Resistance. I am planning on taking the short scramble up to the coastal trail (some Poison Oak, can be present) coastal trail to Kelham beach, walk down the beach , go under the Arch Rock arch scramble up the rock scramble and return via bear valley trail to the visitor center.

quote from the web :

A protruding, scalable rock formation at the southern end of Sculptured Beach is riddled with inviting tide pools, and is the northern frame of a turbulent cove; the cove’s far side is defined by a similar outcrop with a distinguishable arch in its center (see photo gallery). South of these outcrops is Secret Beach. Celebrated for its caves, tunnels and sea stacks, Secret Beach is arguably one of Point Reyes’ most interesting but least accessible beaches. Consult a Ranger for specific travel details, requirements and tide tables.

Pic's from a prev hike  (don't know how many flowers we actually will see, since we pass some areas in the dark)

going the loop in the other direction on a clear night.

http://www.meetup.com/SuperFab/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=8031842

and the same direction I am planning, from 2 years ago,

http://www.meetup.com/SuperFab/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=1960722

(we won't get the killer sunrise in the forest)

Important things you need to know, do not sign up if you have problems with that!!

**Rock Scramble, a short rock scramble at Arch Rock, there are links for pics in the hike write up, and a couple pic's posted below.

** 3-3.5 miles on the beach,

***WEATHER*** will be cool / cold at night and morning. dress in layers!!!

**** partial ** night hike****

**Poison Oak, a few trails have it on the side, know what it looks like.

**the short cup scramble up from secret beach had some Poison Oak last time, it was easy to get around as long as you know what it looks like and pay attention

A few short , steep / up / down / sections, possible some muddy spots.

** you have to answer a couple questions when you sign up, If I do not see any answers I will change your Rsvp to NO.

(I do want to make sure everybody knows about the short rock scramble and taking shoes off, I know it sounds overboard but been there done that, I have used the same hike write up before and one person still commented about not being on the hike if she would have known about the scramble).

Meeting point, at the rest room in the dirt parking lot, on the left, go past the visitor center.

Do not !!!! take Hwy 1 to get to Olema, take hwy 101 and Sir Francis Drake Blvd

Important notes short Rock Scramble, steep up / down / slippery / muddy trail sections /

3 mile hike on the beach, a few sections wher you have to watch out for Poison Oak read all the details below You should have hiked 12+ miles with at least 1500 feet elev. gain lately in order to attend this hike, moving speed is usually around 2.5- 3mph  on most of my hikes ]

.

Rock Scramble we have to do a short rock scramble at arch rock, here are some links to pic's     http://www.meetup.com/SuperFab/photos/889897/14487911/ (you can see a hiker standing on top, short scramble down on the other side, you can click on all sizes then original to see a bigger pic. http://www.meetup.com/SuperFab/photos/889897/14431953/ (the tide should be low and no waves going into the arch) http://www.meetup.com/SuperFab/photos/889897/14431945/ another shot of the rock scramble we have to go up  http://www.meetup.com/SuperFab/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=913920

Trail Condition: Some short steep up/down sections, possible some muddy spots, Clear and easy to follow, with signed junctions. Bear Valley Trail, the final section of the loop, is a wide, smooth and level track open to cyclists as well as hikers.

**** WAIVER please read and sign the waiver I will bring to the hike, I will have your name written on it**** http://files.meetup.com/220424/Super_Fabulicious_waiver.pdf

BRING PLENTY OF WATER[B-)] !!! 2-3 liters , lunch, snacks etc. There is no water avail. at the trail, only at the parking lot. Link to the map   http://www.nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/upload/map_park.pdf

Weather, dress in layers, as it will be chilly at night, possible foggy, windy

CARPOOLS: Fewer cars at the trailhead is always happiness. Meetup does not organize carpools; however we are a friendly group with lots of folks who are interested in sharing rides. If you'd like to offer a ride, please leave a comment in your RSVP letting folks know where you're coming from and how many spaces there are. If you'd like to ride as a passenger, it is YOUR JOB to check the website RSVP list and contact any of the nice people offering a ride to see if they still have a space for you. If you're a passenger and your plans change, please be sure to let the driver know.

***Directions to Bear Valley / Point Reyes**** http://www.nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/directions.htm#CP_JUMP_120643 Google map, the satellite view will show the parking lot and visitor center. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=&daddr=38.040259,-122.799371&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=38.040259,-122.799232&sspn=0.004064,0.006609&ie=UTF8&... Recommended way to get there is SIR FRANCIS DRAKE BLVD and not Hwy 1!! Drive all the way to the end of Sir Francis Drake Blvd, you will hit a T intersection with a stop sign in Olema, turn right onto Hwy 1 there, take your next left after around 300 feet, take the next left after about 0.25 miles (the park entrance) .

here is my gps track, looks like we did close to 18 miles, since I did not use the shortcut from secret beach to the trail, due to the fact that it was still kinda dark going down at sculptured and I wanted to go through there at more daylight, so we backtracked and took the trail.
