HIKE STATS: Start Time 2am Yes I mean 2 AM Sunday Morning
Distance 16 miles loop
Moving speed , usually around 3mph.
Elevation Change +/- 2000ft
Difficulty Advanced, due to distance
Meetup FEE $1
Organized by Chris J. ** e mail me if you have questions**
Important, this will be a partial ***night hike ***mostly on single track trail, !!!!
Don't forget that head lamp.
***Why so early??** Secret beach / cave is only accesible at minus tides, -1.8 feet at 5.30 am.
we should arrive at sculptured beach at around 5-530am
If we are lucky and the sky is clear (small chance) we have the full moon in the sky and then set into the ocean
The hiking route is pretty much the standard loop I am doing, except for the secret beach part, many of us have been at Sculptured Beach and wondered what is beyond that one arch / beach and around the next corner. Today will walk under the small arch and continue down the beach and around the next corner, to explore the beach all the way down to Point Resistance. I am planning on taking the short scramble up to the coastal trail (some Poison Oak, can be present) coastal trail to Kelham beach, walk down the beach , go under the Arch Rock arch scramble up the rock scramble and return via bear valley trail to the visitor center.
quote from the web :
A protruding, scalable rock formation at the southern end of Sculptured Beach is riddled with inviting tide pools, and is the northern frame of a turbulent cove; the cove’s far side is defined by a similar outcrop with a distinguishable arch in its center (see photo gallery). South of these outcrops is Secret Beach. Celebrated for its caves, tunnels and sea stacks, Secret Beach is arguably one of Point Reyes’ most interesting but least accessible beaches. Consult a Ranger for specific travel details, requirements and tide tables.
Pic's from a prev hike (don't know how many flowers we actually will see, since we pass some areas in the dark)
going the loop in the other direction on a clear night.
and the same direction I am planning, from 2 years ago,
(we won't get the killer sunrise in the forest)
Important things you need to know, do not sign up if you have problems with that!!

(I do want to make sure everybody knows about the short rock scramble and taking shoes off, I know it sounds overboard but been there done that, I have used the same hike write up before and one person still commented about not being on the hike if she would have known about the scramble).

Drive all the way to the end of Sir Francis Drake Blvd, you will hit a T intersection with a stop sign in Olema, turn right onto Hwy 1 there, take your next left after around 300 feet, take the next left after about 0.25 miles (the park entrance) .
